Rear Liftgate rubber button replacement?

Well this post was timely. I just bought an 06 yesterday and noticed the sticky hatch switch. Looks like I will be having fun with this shortly when the cover comes in.

Thanks...that is way better than buying the $350 Assembly....and yes I had a blue paper shop towl stuck to mine..gets a little sticky down here

Very straightforward, longest part of the process is cleanup. I found that Goo Gone was key to removing the melted rubber.

Just finished it and it wasn’t too bad. Maybe 45 min with cleanup. Video was very helpful, thanks again!

5th gen 4Runnr lift gate rubber melting and went to dealer to replace it and asking 400+ dollars part and labor. They described the entire internal cover to be removed and the whole switch with rubber cover to be replaced. I did bought the part from dealer ship for about 90 dollars. Also bought form Advance auto mini tool wrench with multiple Philips head screws. Just from the outside unscrew the two screws and pull the switch to pull down, remove the old one cleaned the old rubber and replace with the new one. Put the screw back and everything works perfect.

This is a very late reply to your post, but I bought the little $9.00 kit on Amazon (which included the silicone rubber cover and "S" shaped phillips-head screwdriver) to change out the switch cover. The 2 screws in the factory unit were firmly frozen in place and defied removal. The cover was a gooey, tarry mess (my wife had been complaining). SO, I had to remove the switch to get more leverage on the 2 screws, ended up using a needle-nose vise-grip to get them off. The end result was I got it back together cleaned up and spent about 3 hours, most of which was cleaning the mess out of the switch and surrounding trim. I was glad to save the $$ I would have spent for the new factory part, but I think next time I might spend the $$ and avoid this mess.

Just replaced mine this weekend. Used a large piece of heatshrink as the rubber boot. Works great now, even in -30 degrees.
