Rear locker???

In short yes, but you'll have to make sure you use a third member that has the same gear ratio as the front differential. If you don't, you're asking for bad things to happen.

Simply put, The gear ratios have to match in order to make sure they're not turning at different rates. If they don't, they will bind and there will be a break. There are others on here that can describe this phenomenon much more appropriately than I, but that describtion gets the job done.

Sonoran Steel has a good tech article on their website that lists vin codes and tells you what diffs ratios are in certain 4runners. Use it at your leisure.

Good luck.

So I can swap just the 3rd members for one that's has the elocker or the whole axle?

Not necessarily, With the 3rd member housing on the non elocker housing, i believe there will be some modification for it to fit. I would recommend looking through some 3rd gen build threads to see what others have done as far as the retro fit goes or the axle swap and decide from there with pros and cons or each along with the cost.

I forgot about that Wikki , good catch. That info can be found on our 3rd Gen FAQ also 97Toy.

Yeah... i was looking into the same thing for awhile.... figured it was easier to total my non elocker runner and buy a limited with one in it hahaha

To do a retrofit without buying a locker specific axle: (e-locker) ~$800

1. buy a locking third member, (same as front gearing)
2. pull your non locker axle housing,
3. grind out a notch in the third member circle to accomodate locking mech, drill and tap two new holes for mounting studs out of the ~12 mounting studs that mate the 3rd member to the axle housing, (do NOT f*ck this up)
4. remate to the truck
5. mount factory or aftermarket wiring into the system to control the solenoid.
6. you can't run a rear sway bar without interference/destruction (if you have a lift) Not sure about none lifted.

It is a 6 out of 10 difficulty mechanic-wise. 1 being an oil change, 10 being an effective motor rebuild.

The other options are a ratcheting locker (Not advised for a Daily Driver) Or air lockers... ~$1800 for whole settup.

General Rule of Thumb: Search the shit out of something, then if you still cant find anything, then ask.. Generally you are not the first person to ask the question :)

Using the search definitely has its advantages and will find pretty much anything that you would need...just use it religiously
