Rear Mount Turbo exhaust

I would love if this exhaust pipe came available for us to purchase. If you wouldn't mind could you post up a link to the turbo core and the waste gate?

I have built few turbo kits for other cars and i was wondering why didnt you guys run an internally gated turbo? It would be much simpler to do so and that way the exhaust pipe would be able to lead straight into the housing in comparison to your 90 deg.sure an external is better at controlling high boost levels but we re talking about 7psi here.

Also about the bov... Since its running on maf are you guys recirculating it into the non pressurized air stream or dumping to atmo?

how does the maf react with it being places so close to the tb?

Ever consider running an air/air or air/water intercooler?

Another thing I noticed is that you have your wideband PRE turbo..arn't you worried that your readings will be affected with the sensor being in a "boosted" location?

Where is the air filter going to be located? I'm iffy on the turbo being so exposed underneath to the elements and debris and I've heard of a couple turbos cracking from being extremely hot and then having cold snow/water splashed on them. That's still rare but would concern me a little.

I was thinking about using a internally gated turbo but went with an external cause I find them more reliable and have less chance of boost creep cause it has a bigger opening (44mm) to be exact) . to release more volume faster than an internal.

as long as you have the bov before the maf you do not have a problem not regulating there is no problem running the maf close to the tb. rear mounts do not require an intercooler cause the travel up the piping cools the air. it helps that the turbo does not get as hot since it does not get the heat soak like a normal under hood turbo.

I don't have a wideband

hope that answered all questions:eyebrows:

A 44mm is huge for this application.Internal gates work perfectly well at these boost levels.

I saw a bung with a sensor which looked to be a wideband sensor in the picture.

Are you going to route the snorkel like your buddy or go a different route?

right now I have a k&n on the inlet of the turbo. but eventually I'm gonna do a rear snorkel like clownmeat's runner. the turbo is pretty well protected from rocks and such. the turbo is significantly cooler being rear mount than a under hood setup. clownmeat has had his for a year and we have been through water, mud, and snow with no problems.

I'm not worried about boost level as much as exhaust volume. a 3.4 is a lot more motor than say a Honda b16 or other 4 cylinders. just personal preference. and it sounds pretty angry when the gate opens up.:eyebrows:

the o2 is the stock one. I just put a bung in it. I might do a wideband later but not sure. I don't really fear leaning it out with only 7psi.

I will do a rear snorkel eventually.

Quick tip because i notice the member above buying an ebay bov for 40+$.
You can find the 1g dsm bovs for really cheap (under 25$) and they re very well built.

Or you can without. Alot of controversy over this but with my miata and my gtr i've never had any issue/ turbo damage.

I had a greddy type s knockoff... worked well until I pulled it apart and probably damaged the diaphragm.

This is awesome yoterman! Thanks for posting the parts you purchased too. Thats a great reference.

I have actually been pm'ing back and forth a bit with clownmeat over the past few weeks as I am strongly considering doing this in the spring and am still learing about how to build a turbo.

Question,

did you guys ever consider the pros and cons of doing a front rather than rear mount? I know the obvious concern is the engine bay temp. But as Im considering the way Id like to do mine, I just wonder if the front mount would be plausible. Less lag time and less potential of damaging intake piping/tubo/air filter are what attract me to a front mount. Also being that I dont plan on crawling through deep water I wouldnt ever need to worry about a snorkle.

A guy over on customtacos did a front mount and did a really good job. He mounted his intercooler right on top of the air plenum, and then made a custom hood scoop to cool it.

What are your thoughts on this? Would the intercooler make the project much more intensive?

We did consider both under hood and rear mount. problems with under hood are, like you said the heat, manifolds are expensive if you can even find them, and they are a pain to make. and it doesn't sound as cool. lol. and for the lag. clownmeat starts building boost at 1200 rpm and is at full 7psi at about 3 grand. he can power brake and launch at the full 7psi. even for a under hood setup that's pretty impressive. We were able to accomplish this by doing the math and finding the appropriate sized turbo and volume of charge pipe.

if you do a under hood I strongly recommend a intercooler but behind the grill not above the engine. (just a personal opinion) I just couldn't justify using an intercooler to cool the air when you are cooking it over a engine.:flame: and with a rear mount a intercooler is not necessary.

man... I was watching his hill climb video. Sounds like a turbo diesel. amazing.

mmm I have two spare turbos. Wonder how a 3.0 would do... no. cant. lol.
