I just got home with a rattle at the rear of my T4R. I just put in a Gobi Stealth and ladder and figured that was it! I retightened everything and still the rattle continued. After a closer look I find out the top threaded portion from my rear shock is broken! Of course everyone is now closed, can anyone tell me if it's safe to drive? It's 30 miles on a deserted highway to the dealer...

Slow and steady, no abrupt maneuvers, you should be OK. The rear springs support the weight of the vehicle, the shocks just control up/down movement. You have a BOSS kit from Toytec? I'd be on the phone with them first as, barring some catastrophic driving event, this shouldn't have happened.

..just thinking about how this could have happened, it might be prudent to torque everything on your suspension. In particular check all your rear control arm bolts and rear track-bar/panhard bar to make sure everything is looking right. I'd visually inspect your brake lines too, I usually do anytime I'm under my vehicles.

Dude that sucks. You can drive it but take it really really easy. That shock limits your down travel so if you hit a big bump your spring could come out and then you would be totally ****ed. I would throw the stocker on it before I drove it. If you don't have it buy a cheapo auto parts store one to put on there temporarily.

I'd see if the dealership will send a flat bed to tow you out there for a replacement. Otherwise the Gear Shop in the NE deals with a lot of Fox shocks. It's doubtful any other dealership will honour warranty on them since they're aftermarket parts.

Yeah I was thinking about it and i would not drive it without a rear shock. It's just not worth what could be lots of damage to save the cost of a cheapo shock or a tow.

Had a similar issue with my Fox 2.0 rears a few weeks ago. Fox said that I would have to send them the shocks and they would repair or replace them. Great but this is my DD so I can't run around without them. Just cleaned up the threads and put red loctite on them. Mine only came unthreaded from the body but yours looks broken.

Like others have said - remove the shock completely and just drive carefully. You'll be fine to get to the dealer - I was with [MENTION=62008]limamike[/MENTION] when his broke and we drove it over 60 miles (half off-road) back to base camp in Colorado. This failure is unfortunately common on our 4Runners and FJs. That shock post is a weak point, regardless of what shock you run.

120+ miles total! I think 60some were offroad and a good portion of the offroad miles were coming off the Alpine Loop. Super fun times. :driving:

I would recommend not doing that. Loctite isn't going to hold it for the long term because the threads are stripped (hence why it fell out of the mount to begin with). When the shock comes loose it hyperextends and will screw-up your wheel well if you drive around on it like that. I suggest you do what [MENTION=51030]joneseyyy[/MENTION] suggested and just remove it to send it back. Driving around without it on highway/city won't cause you any real issues for a few days.
I took the shock off it is not a fox it is labelled Boss Toytec... I was under the impression it the Boss kit came with the fox...
Update: Took to dealer and they replaced the shock, lucky they had one in stock. had to pay for install.
