Rear Turbo + Snorkel + Regular Intake???

Hey guys,

I have been pondering on an dual intake set up for my rear turbo system... I am wanting/needing to add a snorkel to my set up! I have every intention of partially submerging the truck on expeditions etc, and need to protect the intake/turbo, BUT I would also like to keep my normal intake set up as well!

1- Anybody know if electronic exhaust cutouts are tight enough to be considered waterproof? My thought is, I could do a "dual" intake setup using an electronically controlled exhaust cutout that people use on their exhaust set ups to close off the normal intake when needed!

If I could keep both open during normal driving conditions, BUT shut off the "cone" with the flip of a switch during heavy rains, snow or crossing water then that would be ideal. I am thinking that running a snorkel 100% of the time might decrease the overall air flow through my system?

2-Can someone with more knowledge confirm or deny this for me?
-Would water get past the cutout valve and sucked into the turbo?
-Does it even make sense for me to want to keep my "normal" cone intake set up coming off my turbo in conjunction with a snorkel set up?

If you submerge the original, wouldn't it fill up with water? You'd have to have a way to evacuate the water either way before flipping the switch back from the 'snorkel' intake
 
I have seen these installed on some cars and they are not meant to be submerged at all from what I know and there was no way it was water sealed. Good luck!

@vokinator, Sh*t... that didn't even cross my mind!!! I'm an idiot!

I have seen these installed on some cars and they are not meant to be submerged at all from what I know and there was no way it was water sealed. Good luck!

I think you will be fine, the turbo will make up for any decreased airflow.
 
depending on where you're putting your turbo... what if you ran the intake to the storage cubby in the back? Put your pantyhose around it to keep some dust off and if you get water that high you'll have other problems anyways... Sound deaden around it. Profit?

You could even do some cool side air inlets like they use on the supercars to cool the brakes ;) Like a side scoop!

Only issue is noise. That would be loud as hell you would think inside your vehicle.

That's true. I can hear the K&N pod sucking on mine from the engine bay... esp. with the S/C... It'd sound like a jet taking off inside the cab with a turbo sucking in!
 
Ok so I need to ask, how far through have you thought about this setup? You're planning on a rear mount turbocharger, that will be potentially submerged, like fully submerged?

So you're going to take a part that is half aluminum, half cast-iron and bolted together, that operates above 500 degrees (easily), which will then be bolted to steel pipe, and plan on fully submerging it in cool, flowing water?

I'm not trying to patronize, but all of these metals expand and contract at substantially different rates and this is a really easy way to destroy a turbo. It's one thing to get a little water sprayed up and boil off of the housing, but it doesn't sound this is a practical application for what you plan on doing with your rig.

Im completely with you. I didnt want to say it but sounds like a crazy idea. An overland vehicle thats going over water crossings and potentially could be damaged from rocks or debris at the turbo/exhaust just sounds like trouble.

But the water should not be an issue, I have washed my hot turbos and driven them in lots of snow/water many times. They are made to take the elements.

You both have very valid points and to be honest I have been thinking heavily about both of them!

My main concern is the quick temp change from the normal operating of the turbo to cooling down so quick, BUT I know I am not the first that will have done this with a rear mount turbo... and I have been driving it all winter through snow, slush, and rain (which I know is not as extreme of a temp change).

Also, the turbo housing is actually somewhat protected as it sits up tight against the bottom of the body. I will definitely have to be aware of any debris that could possibly make contact with the turbo housing though!

The elements should not cause an issue. People run high hp application turbos on the ice lakes in the winter with no issues.
 
I'm thinking about a rear-mount for my '85 as well. The turbo isn't going to run as hot back there as it would sitting on top of an exhaust manifold. I asked a local fellow who built turbos at STS for several years, he said the temps on the turbo itself aren't much higher than they'd be on a muffler.

Now, there's no precision parts in a muffler, so dunking the turbine could still be an issue, but it's not like you're crossing water at the end of a quarter mile drag strip. And besides, that's the upside of sticking it in back - it's much less likely to find a home in your crank case when it grenades! :D
 
I'm not going to even think about leaving the intake under the truck, though. I'm hoping to run a snorkel up the bedside and through the quarterpanel.
 
I think there is a difference between driving in rain etc ,washing a turbo and fully submerging a turbo in water. Think of riding your brakes down that long hill and then plunging in to that creek crossing at the end. What happened to your brake rotors? A bit of a pulsation maybe. As for the snorkel not flowing enough air. If your custom building it just use bigger pipe.

Like stated above the turbo wont be on the manifold so it should not really be as hot as brakes.
