Rear Turn Signal Tint

I saw this picture in the 5th gen picture gallery, I just saved the pic but didn't pay attention to whose 4Runner this is.

What is the best product to use for tinting the turn signal like this? I was reading about the sprays and it seems like those tend to turn to a matte finish after a coupe of washes. Is there a film that holds up better or a particular spray that keeps its finish or do you just re-apply periodically?

Not sure, but keep in mind that tinting the reverse lights like that is pretty dumb if you're trying to see where you're going, especially if you've tinted the windows. I'd want to keep my reverse lights as exposed as possible as I have 5% VLT all around, but then that'd look dumb just tinting the turn signal area and not the entire lower half...

It's also often illegal in many places, and is a potential safety hazard.

That said, most people in the Subaru scene use vinyl overlays for this kind of stuff.

I used niteshade in the past.
The last time I tinted tails, we mixed Nightshades and clear coat.. But I was getting this done at a shop

Thanks for the tip, just searched through his posts and he mentions VHT Nightshades.

Interested to know if it needs clear over it to make it glossy or protect the finish. If so any clear or does it need a VHT clear?

yes, you do need clear coat. as I mentioned above, I didn't use VHT clear on mine, but I do have access to a body shop.

I actually missed you're post, sorry about that.

I have nice paint gun and some experience painting cars, so I suppose I just paint them the next time I'm shooting some clear.

no problem at all. didn't mean it to sound like a "in your face, yo".

with your experience and equipment, you are already miles ahead of the average VHT user

I bought those taillights from Jesse few months ago and they are not that dark as they seem on the pic. There are more like the new Mazda6 tint on their taillights.

I would use Lamin-x over nightshades since it will not fade. Plus if you ever get tired of it you can just pull it off.

Thanks for the link, interesting product. I like that it is easily removable, seems relatively inexpensive as well. I think I might actually try this out before painting due to the cost, if I don't like it I'll do the night shades with the clear coat when I repaint my bumper.

Yeah it is illegal in a lot of places to have anything tinted.
tails, head lights, and even front passenger windows

That said, the ride I had before the 4runner had almost a limo tint on tails, and I was not hassled

If they need a reason to pull you over you're definitely giving them one... I haven't had a front licence plate on a car in 15 years and have never been pulled over for it. Generally they have better things to enforce, but you can still get a ticket for it so its a risk.

I picking up the VHT tomorrow and I've got the clear from by bumper repair so we'll see how it goes. Depending on the weather and how late I want to stay up it maybe done this week. I'll post up some pics when I'm done, if it works out.
