Rear Vent Visors problems/questions?

On my wife's 2013 4 runner I installed EGR vent visors on front and rear. My problem/question is with the rear windows visors. The glue has let go and or has not held so the visor has slipped down on the front and wear of either or vent visor so the glue is exposed and is no longer good to hold. Has anyone else had this problem. Does anyone no of a way to fix this or is it just best to buy a new set of rear visors with fresh glue???


I don't want to tear the weather stripping around the window and or hurt it to wear it would or will leak water!!! Please any advice would be great. I have attached a photo please forgive the quality as it was dark and taken with my cell phone.

Hi duckman,

You can use 3M brand "Weather stripping adhesive"; just a thin layer will do. You'll need to clean all wax/oils off of the window frame area first w/an alcohol pad 'before you press the visor on' or the same will occur. Good luck!

I would definitely try some 3M double sided automotive tape. I used this on the Silverado I had previous to my 4runner to seal some weather stripping on the front window. Worked perfectly. I also used it to seal some mud flaps on that same truck to keep them from rubbing the paint where they met the outside of the wheel well. Works great and won't hurt the paint if removed.

Thanks guys for the info. I will look into the 3m tape. I have never had vent visors do this before when installed new they are only 6 months old. I suspect the cause to be the rear window safety feature that didn't allow the window to close all the way once installed? I have to slowely roll them up to overcome this as if I don't the windows will drop right back down.

I didn't install myself the dealership did and I am willing to best once they installed the windows did go up and wasn't noticed till the tape sat up and in turn caused them to fall before taking a hold like they were suppose to do?

Guys this might be a dumb question but here goes. how do I remove the visors from the rear windows where they actual stuck to under the weather stripping without hurting the weather stripping? Also how do I need to go about cleaning the old glue from under the weather stripping so the 3m tape will stick to it?

ouch, someone did an epic fail on the install.

your suppose to stick them to the bodywork just above the windows for those that use the sticky tape.

maybe someone can pipe in on a liquid that can release the sticky part of the tape so you can peel them off.

otherwise your looking at new seals.

Ok I am confused by your comments. This are in channel vent visors so they don't go on the body work and or metal. New seals what do you mean by that?

in-channels never have 3m adhesive tape. there just isn't enough room in the channel for the vent visor and adhesive tape. if someone put adhesive tape using in-channels that may be your issue.

but then again I never use in-channels due the issues you could develop. some on here have had zero issues, others have had issue with the pinch feature due to in-channels.

On the in channels there is a small strip that has peels off at the top am has adhesive tape to hold in place. On mine that adhesive didn't hold for possiable reasons listed above. So now I have to come up with a way to add something to it so they will hold again. Not quite sure if 3m tape will work due there not being enough room in the channel for it?

Any other thought or ideas how I can correct this? I don't want to change them out unless needed but truly don't see another easy way to do so other then to change them out. I just don't want to damage the wetherstriping! Thanks for all the help.

the only thing I can think of is that you may have to replace the weather stripping/seal to resolve your issue unless you can find a solvent to breakdown the adhesive in the tape.

The weathertechs actually have a very thin strip of adhesive on the rear visors.
Op..maybe taking a blow dryer and heating it up a little might help removing the adhesive

Update guys,

While I have not done anything yet I noted today that the rears were almost all the way out of the channel so the glue is not sticking anymore. So i am just planing on getting new rear vent visors with new tape. I will simple remove the old ones and install the new ones. I belive the glue on the first set did not stick as designed.

I had one of those Weathertechs blow off from the rear window somewhere in Missouri last year. Got back, put the vent visor brand on that go over the window and had no problems. BTW WD-40 on a rag will soften the glue from double sided tape.

Remove existing and install new ones properly myself as the others were done by dealership or auto acc. Shop can't remember which.

Either the glue was bad, got installed wrong. I do recall the windows not wanted to go up due the safety feature on rear windows in which I had to ease them
The windows up slowly to allow it shut. I plan to do this sometime this week.

I installed "Wade" in channel visors back when I first bought the SUV almost 4 years ago, no issues. I love the looks of visors, and in channel visors looks so much cleaner IMO.
The wades come with a double sided 3m tape, just like regular visors. At first, first week or so I had issues where window would automatically go back down do to "pinching" I guess. Issue went away as they settled in. Love them and will install them on all future cars right after tinting the windows like usual.

I thoroughly cleaned the part where you will stick them on with a alcohol swab thingy that came with the kit. If surface is 100% clean, that 3m tape that comes with almost any product now should last forever, if not they sell a red roll of 25feet of this crazy outdoor rated 3m tape that can be cut to whatever. I use it for work, and it's the strongest double sided tape you can find.

I had tought to just pull the visor out and clean the old glue off them then install new 3m tape and reinstall existing one but with the in channel is there enough room for 3m tape? The glue that is on the visors is very thin. I just don't want to hurt the weather stripping by putting something to big or trying to force something into the channel that can't fit.

Take the visors to a NAPA or other chain automotive store, or even better a body shop supplier, and describe what you need. They should be able to sell you the thin tape you need. It is a paper thin 2 sided tape.

Ok picked up some 3m tape as small width I could. The next quisten is weather to use it on one side or the other and or both? As we all no there is limted space when installing in channels. My thoughts are to remove the old existing ones and clean off all glue and use the new 3m on one side and install roll up windows and let the tape hold them without rolling down the windows so a few days.
