Rear wheel bearing play

Hey guys, i pulled my rear axles today and seem to have significant play in the brake backplate on the axle. Im assuming this is due to worn wheel bearings but was hoping to confirm before i have them replaced. Right rear seal is leaking and was supposedly just replaced by previous owner.

Zero play is expected between the wheel drum/hub and the axle. I have a little play in both rears and Ive thrown a seal at one. So far its held for over a year now.

All you need to tell us is how many miles are on those bearings?

If it is Toyota part then I would think (based on my 2 rear axel seal failures over the years) it may fail between 100-150k miles on the bearings. Then repeat.

If those aren't Toyota bearings then it could be much less time.

With the axle out, there is a little bit of play. The backing plate rocks back and forth about a 1/4". I have verified this with old bearings and brand new OEM bearings. There should be ZERO play with the axle mounted in the housing.
Chances are the seal is leaking again because of one or more of the possible scenarios: Improper previous repair of axle seals, bad wheel bearings (see previous problem), or restricted rear axle breather.

I'm getting at least 1/4in of rock on the backing plate, maybe a little more. Truck has 167k on it they almost have to be the factory bearings. It sounds like I should go ahead and rebuild both sides?

Yeah, just replace them. You're in there anyways, although there is considerably more work and expense to replace the bearings. I found OEM( but not Toyota packaged) on Ebay for $30 a piece. Toyota wants around $80 a piece.

Yeah I read bigfishallday's write up. I know he replaced the two metal rings and the abs ring, are these items 100% non reusable?

I reused one of the retainers (the one closest to the bearing) and the ABS exciter ring, but I pressed everything off. whereas some cut everything off, thus needing to replace both retainers and the ABS exciter. This also could possibly damage the axle shaft by creating a groove where oil can sneak under the inner retainer, if this is where the axle where damaged. I put a little sleeve retainer on them but to be honest those things were tight when I pressed them back in place. The retainer on the inside got replaced because that's the one the seal rides on.
I also used Dr Coffee's "method" to ensure proper positioning of the inner retainer which is critical to the completing the repair successfully.
If you do press them off make sure to remove the snap ring between the outer retainer and the exciter ring and replace the snap ring. It only cost's a couple of bucks. Good luck!
 
Thanks for all the tips and info. We replaced both bearings.

Now a new problem has shown up. The passenger side axle won't go back in. We just spent two hours trying to get it to slide back in and it just won't. Driver side went back together without much trouble. Any idea what could cause that axle to bind like that and not slide up in there?
