There was not much space in my 4th Gen but I do really miss the storage boxes there. Anybody considered / done this mod?

Harper7 talked about it in his mod thread and showed pictures of how it could be done (with a surprising amount of dis-assembly required). Then someone else (I don't remember who) did the same mod, but using a more brute-force method.

I know that the amp is on the passenger side of the Limited, so no value added for me to do the mod on that side, but I would consider doing it to the driver side at some point. When I read those threads many months ago, I wasn't yet brave enough to break things. I've learned a little more and gotten a little braver since then, so maybe...

I was the "brute force guy". If you pull up on the side closest to the window, you will break the tabs on the cover that holds the screws. They break cleanly, without any damage to the panel. Then you can remove the top piece, trim some of the tabs and it snaps in and out easily.

Sounds like another mod to add to your thread...with a few pictures for those of us who are timid about anything involving the word "break" concerning our T4R's! :thanks:

antman, have you posted any pictures of the result, by chance?

Dog dangit, Scuba!! lol

I'll try to get some pics tomorrow. I'm getting ready to do some night fishing with my wife (ease your dirty minds, fellas). :fishing:

And I was the "guy that already had it out"lol ...... http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/77827-extra-storage-space-mod.html

If brute forcing it.....Just remember there are a couple of screws holding it to the panel on the inboard side.

Once again- this was originally Harper7's idea, but here are some pics from my "Brute Force Access" (BFA) method to the storage area :

This is the direction you would pry up on the lids to break the tabs:

I'm pointing to where the tabs break

And here's a shot under a lid, and the amount of space in the wheelwells. I don't have an A/C outlet nor an amp back there, so I have a pretty good amount of space.

Thanks Antman (and Harper for the additional pics). I think there is some breaking of stuff in my near future!:thumb3:

Excellent use of devil horns, ROCK ON!!!

HAHAHAHA, after they are broken off does the top stay put or does it rattle around with every bump you hit?

No rattling. As of yet, I have only broken the two main points that allow it to screw down (like I Antman's mod). As you can see from Harper7's picture with arrows, there are still a lot of smaller clips that hold it down. I have not yet cut off any of the extra clips he recommends to cut off. I may in time.

I'm still not really sure what I'm going to put under there, but I'll come up with something. Sometimes it's just fun to break things and find extra storage!

It snaps back into place and stays there. What do you think I'm some sort of a HACK? :bash:

Noooooooo, of course not but you may want to change your screen name to hackman instead....:boxer:. I wounder how the inside of that could be finished off, hmmmmmm I think you should work on that and report back to us with a "how to" thread. Whaddya think?

Already did it. I have some carpet that fits in there to keep stuff from rattling around. It's not worth the effort to make it pretty IMO. hackman....hackman.....growing on me. Maybe if I join the Jeep Forum.

Both sides came off without much effort. Having a Limited there is not much room on the driver side but I'm grateful for every extra square inch of storage.

Thanks you sir and LIST THIS IN YOUR MOD THREAD! :D
