Rear window doesn't go down all the way

I just picked up my 2012 limited today and back window does not go all the way down. Maybe 1/2 to 1 inch still exposed. Dealer said that is the case for the 2012. Didn't buy what he was saying and told them I would check on it and have to bring it back.

That is when you reach in your back pocket...pull out your wallet...slide our your drivers license and hand it to him....he will ask you want this is for....and your response is....just showing you I was not born yesterday....fix it!

I went to roll down my rear window this morning and it didn't budge. My heart dropped and I said to myself, "Oh, crap. Maybe I accidentally broke something when I was routing my CB coax." Then I remembered that I was futzing around in the center console and I could have forgotten to reconnect the switch. I pulled-up the center console, plugged the switch back into the harness and it worked.

I was wondering if any of you all have had this issue recently? I recently purchased a 15' SR5 and I just noticed yesterday that I have about an inch or so of the back window sticking out. It wasn't like that when I purchased it. I have tried searching the forum for troubleshooting answers and have come up empty handed. I tried setting the regulator as Harper7 suggested however that did not work. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I have a new 2016 trail edition. My window also stops retracting with 1" glass protruding. Dealer is trying to find another trail to confirm that it's not normal. Could anyone with a trail confirm their window goes all the way down.

I’m having the same issue, and I’m out of warranty so I’d rather not take it to the $tealer$hip. Did anyone figure out if there is a solution other than replacing the regulator and motor?

did you try the reinitialization procedure mentioned by harper7 in post 17 above? (and also in your manual?)

I just noticed today that my rear window has about an inch sticking out when it's rolled down. I'm pretty sure it's supposed to go all the way down, but it stops pretty firmly with an inch sticking out. This isn't normal is it?

Just need confirmation before I head to the dealer.

My 2015 isn't going all the way down. Tried the initialization procedure with no luck. I hate having dealers work on my cars but i suppose i should take it in while i still have warranty.

How weird, so many with this issue. My 2012 SR5 indeed goes down all the way. I only use it that way when I have to let some thing stick out the back otherwise it is always securely in the up position.

Yeah, but my 2012 being 6 years old I thought I'd put my 2 cents in. Interesting others have the isue as well and various years. Gotta love those dealers that say it's "normal" .

I know this original post is 10 years old. I recently traded my 05 limited (frame rust finally got too bad) with 230k on it for a 2012 with 64k. Thought I had found the unicorn I'd been searching for the last few years. Seemed to have been used very lightly and garage kept. Frame was in incredible shape. Better than a lot of 2016 models I had checked out. At any rate, I just noticed, the other day, that the rear window sticks out about an inch after "fully" opening it. Assumed it was a 5th generation thing and didn't think much about it other than thinking it was dumb because I had stuffed my kayak in the back of my 05 from time and time and thought I might break my window if I do it in my new one. I checked the internet for kicks and it led me to this page. Anyone find out if there is any other kind of fix other than the motor and regulator needing replaced? I tried the reset of opening and closing 6 seconds, 2 seconds,2 seconds with no fix. I looked up the previous owners (on the title) and they were elderly like the salesperson said, so I wouldn't be surprised if I was the first one to ever use the back window.

I just bought it a couple weeks ago so it might fall under the 50/50 warranty but even that would be a lot of money for an extra inch, I imagine. Thanks for any information you can provide.

There is most likely nothing wrong with the motor, just replace the regulator, they are around $150. Mine's been bad for many years, but I don't like dust, so I wouldn't use it anyway and haven't fixed, just unplugged the switch.

Thanks. Seems odd to have this problem on such a lightly used and lightly corroded vehicle, did your's ever roll the entire way down? I'm wondering if a bunch came from the factory this way and a lot of people never use it and/or never notice. My buddy has a 2017 and said he's never rolled his down. I kind of bought it, over a used Lexus GX, because of this feature. My rear window on my 05 worked great for 18 years and 230k. Hate to start tearing things apart only two weeks after buying it. Oh well, it's only $150 I guess.

I generally don't read through lengthy threads that I've not read before, but am glad that I did this one. I learned something.

My T4R is an '18 SR5. My rear window rolls fully down. But, as per the service bulletin posted earlier, this procedure must be performed after battery replacement. So will tuck that away for future reference when I have to replace my OEM battery. I do use my back window now and then.

I saw on the Carfax that the person, who owned my vehicle previously, got a new battery a year before trading it in so I was hoping that maybe a reset was all it needed. Problem is that part of the step is rolling the window all the way down and waiting two seconds. Mine won't roll all of the way down so I don't know that I can complete the sequence or if it would even matter. I ordered the part for $150 and intend to attempt to replace it but can't help but think I'm still going to have the problem after replacing the regulator. I was hoping to hear more from the people who had the problem fixed chime in. I think I've read one person who said the dealership replaced the regulator and the motor because they didn't know what the problem was. If I look in and it's obviously rusty or the cable is frayed I'll change it but I expect it's going to look great and then I'm not sure if it will be worth swapping it out.

Mine has always rolled all the way down until the glass is flush (or below) the sill just fine. It started slowing down around 2014 and would no longer roll up as of 2016, as it would engage the pinch protection and roll back down.

okay thanks. That's helpful to know. Mine opens and closes fine and as though nothing is wrong. It stops suddenly at about an inch high everytime as though it were designed that way.
