Rear Windshield Question

I have two questions about the rear windshield on the 4th generation 4Runner's. First, when you first turn the rear wiper to intermitent, does anybody else have theirs give three consecutive wipes and then go to intermitent? The second question is if there is a mist cycle for the rear wiper. I thought when you turn the stick all the way down (where you do not have to go through the speeds to wash the window), the wiper is supposed to give two or three wipes to wash the window. Mine just sprays the window. I just realized this today when I was parked and actually payed attention to what the windshield was doing!

Same thing happens with mine. I thought I had to go back to read the manuel to make it work right. Guess I'm not the only one that thinks somethings wrong there.

Questions for the dealer.

Mark86, thanks for pointing out the rear "mist" wiper inaction. Never got that far before but checked it out and the same situation exists on the CAN T4R. You learn little things about this vehicle and there aren't to many strange situations but I think this is a definite anomaly so unlike Toyota. Does anyone have experience with other Toys with rear wipers? What is the setup on the 3rd Gen?
My question for the dealer on my next visit will be: Where is the wiper action when you mist the rear window or what is Toyota thinking by not doing it?
My other question will be: Why does the cruise control have a resume setting to restore the preset speed if it drops out completely below 40 km/h? I find this very annoying especially in multi-lane non-freeway conditions.
I'm not overly optomistic but I hope both of these situations can be corrected. I look at these items the same as other minor mods ("customization" or "tweaking") but in this case I want Toyota to do the work because they have the technology. I'm even willing to pay them for the cruise "fix". Let's see what their answer is when we take quality to the next level, total customer satisfaction.

Rear Wiper Washer

The selection with just fluid spraying is also on the 94 Land Cruiser and 97 LX450 (they're the same truck) I don't know why you would spray without wiping...

I think it's nice that it wipes several times and then goes to intermittent. Does a good job of clearing up what has built up.

Mine work the same. Only thing I have noticed is that sometimes when I first turn it on to intermittant, it sometimes takes four or five seconds to start the first time. I believe the sprayer is designed to work that way, and there is no 'mist' function available on the rear wiper.

Thanks everyone. I agree that when you switch the windshield to int. and it wipes the window three times first is useful. What was Toyota thinking when they did not put in a mist cycle for the rear window? Think about it, who sprays their window and then does not wipe it away?

If you think about it, you can only spray after you have turned the rear wiper on since the spray function is the last position on the switch. What I would have rather seen them do is allow you to spray first, then start the wiper like the front system. This way, the wiper is not scraping a dirty window before the washer fluid is applied. I guess it is another of those 'how much do we engineer in, and at what cost' deals.

Tech Wrench. there are 2 spraying positions. One is if you twist in the opposite direction from intermittent. It'll simply spray, no wiping. The other spraying is at the end you're talking about, after all the wiping choices.

I'll have to check that out, I never noted the 2nd spray position. I still think there has to be a limit on how many 'functions' one can deal with on these stalks. It's a wonder anyone can keep their eyes on the road while trying to navigate all the possible 'distractions' required to operate these accessories in newer vehicles. I see people every day that have trouble talking and driving at the same time. You put 2 or 3 accessory stalks, a digital radio and a NAV screen in front of them and you have an accident looking for a place to happen!

TechWrench, the position I am talking about is when you turn the knob opposite of the way you would to turn on the back windshield. I never knew about this until I accidently turned it the wrong way. You hold it and it springs back.

LOL, I guess you haven't seen the BMW 745IL? The accesories on it are insane. There are so many knobs and doohickies it makes my head spin..!

My pocketbook is stretched pretty thin with the SR5, it won't even let me walk on a BMW lot let alone look inside one.
