Rear Wiper Delete

Hey All. New guy here.

I tried searching for this but couldn't find any help on the subject.

What I need to do is to simply remove and delete the rear wiper. The whole thing needs to go. After removing the nut, I figured I could just pull off the remaining and possibly place a black rubber cap over the exposed stud. Well, what remains of the arm will not come off of that stud. What's the trick?

If it's anything like the rear wiper on my old car which I deleted in a similar fashion, you have to hold it steady from the inside and unscrew what's left from the stud, then remove the assembly w/ stud from the inside of the trunk to leave an open hole you can plug. You won't be able to get everything out from the outside of the truck.

Most of them are pressure-fit over a rigged stud. You may just need to pry it up evenly.

As an idea for a plug, for the Porsche 944 they made a plug for the wiper on the rear hatch, and I can't imaging there's too many different sizes and junk for them... just an idea:

I was hoping to get the job done all from the outside of the vehicle...

Well, since I now have to take apart the interior skins of the hatch - anyone have good instructions?

The Porchse plug idea is similar to what I was thinking as well.

Plugs like the one linked do require the whole assembly to be removed from the inside, or else what's left will still get in the way of it. It should be pretty self-explanatory to remove, just start removing trim and unscrewing stuff until it comes out!

Also, the one posted above is really expensive for a rubber grommet, probably just because it's from a Porsche? This is the one myself and a few others have used, it fits all the Mazdas and Hondas and Scions that have tried it, so it probably fits the 4R as well:

Leave it to Porsche to charge $40 for a .50 cent part. I still think $15 is pricey for what it is.

I just replaced the plastic molded seat belt "guide" for the rear-mid seat belt and that was only $5.28 from the dealer...

This project will give me something to do on Monday at work while I'm not working. :wink2:

After taking care of a few other fixes (light bulbs, luggage rack caps, window regulator, Ipod integration, seat belts, brakes, alignment, wipers, new remote fob, etc.)... I'm now back on this PITA.

I have decided to keep my rear wiper system, however, it does need to be replaced obviously. I cannot get the remaining part off of this thing. Some have mentioned that it may be "pressure fitted" onto the stud. I'm not exactly understanding this as it is on the actual threaded bolt (see pics).

I have removed interior skin to have a look at the motor and assembly. I doubt removing the motor would help unless someone knows a trick. What I need to do is simply remove everything from the threaded bolt and start new. On that note - anyone have the part number for a whole new rear wiper assembly?

When I replaced my rear wiper it had badly oxidized around that nut. It was a bit of a PITA to remove. What I ended up doing:

1. Take a hacksaw, CAREFULLY cut all the plastic from around the metal nut. You can use pliers to grab chunks of plastic and tear them off that nut if you have to.
2. Once all the plastic is gone from the nut, you can then take your pliers, pinch between the top of the stud and the bottom of the nut. It should (eventually) pop off.

Just be careful, this is a great way to create a beautiful blood blister.

Once you get that stud bare, you can install the new one. Unfortunately the only way Toyota seems to sell it is from that nut all the way to the tip of the wiper.

The rear wiper should be just like the front wiper system. It is a pressure fit spline. The best way I've found to remove stuck wiper assemblys is to use a battery terminal remover. I bought one a Checker Auto (now O'Riellys) for under $5. Autozone or any auto parts store should have the puller.

I'm propping myself here to look like a real dunce....

I get the idea of how a battery terminal puller works, however, this bolt (stud) has threads. After removing all of the plastic from the remaining nut, doesn't this have to be unscrewed? How can you simply "pull" a threaded nut off of a threaded bolt?

R.A. is correct - that it pulls straight off. I didn't have that item he had so I ended up hacking it w/my saw. What can I say, if your only tool is a hammer, the world looks like a bunch of nails.

I was mostly trying to minimize the stress on the motors and its associated mounting w/excessive pulling and such.

Bottom line, it's in a bad spot being on the rear gate. If you live in a snow area the Mag Chloride is going to cover that rear gate. While it does a great job on ice it's pretty wicked what it does to your vehicle. It would've been nice if Toyota would've put a nut back there that was resistant to all corrosion but they didn't.

Done!

After I hacked the plastic off, I used Snyders trick of pinching the bottom of the nut and the top of the bolt (didn't feel like a trip to O'Reilly's). Popped right off. Now I can actually see what a pressure fitting looks like.

In the meantime while I figure out when to replace the whole unit, I had this leftover rubber cap that fits perfectly over the whole exposed section. Don't want more corrosion to occur.

Anyone have the part number for the whole wiper unit?

Thanks WellingtonB that parts list was exactly what I was looking for... 1 question though... does the wiper blade have the piece that the 2 screws go through as well, or is that a separate piece and if so; do you have that part number?

Your lucky. When I tried to remove mine the whole stud broke off. As far as I can tell the only way to fix that is to replace the whole motor. That's $200 that I don't really need to spend here in AZ.
