Rebuilding CV axles...

is a pain. Big thanks to HungryEddy and Doc for the help. It took us about four hours. We rebuilt them using silicone boots from CVJ Axle here in Denver. We learned a lot along the way. I still can't really imagine changing a CV on the trail.

I'm exhausted. Pics tomorrow with a few questions.

Well, the outer drivers side boot's clamp came undone already. I threw a hose clamp on there in the interim, but I'm sort of worried that the clearance of the tightening mechanism is too high and the thing will start hitting other parts of my truck.

Ugh. So much grease...everywhere.

I'm going to swing by CVJ tomorrow (?) and see if they can give me their opinion. The inner boot on the driver side looks really crunched up too. =/

Why not just have cvj do it? I believe it costs $70. I've never bothered to try to re-build them myself. They usually have 3rd gen axles ready to go. I just drop off my old ones as a core and they give me a new one for $70. Sounds like its a PIA, so it might be worth the $ to just have them do it.

And I think they just charge $25 to re-boot them if the axle themselves are still good.

Well, we were interested in learning how to do it, and I'm also pretty limited financially. That $70 could go towards a recovery strap or a fire extinguisher.

Also, that doesn't include parts, right? That takes a $95 job to reboot both axles ourselves instead with nice inner silicone boots all the way up to $235. That is, unless that $70 includes parts...which I would happily consider at this point.

It *is* a pain, but it will get easier each time I'm guessing.

Nope that includes parts. You hand them your busted one as a core and they give you a re-maned one for $70ish. I'll try to see if I can find one of my receipts, but from what I can remember it was right around $70.

It's a messy job, that's for sure. I used the OE parts. The kit is $30-$35 per axle. They've been on for 35K miles and I haven't had a problem. Below is what's included in the kit #04438-35060
