It took 7 hours, but I removed the interior panels, head liner, and moonroof and fixed the problem. Well, I guess it's not actually fixed as it's defective, but it is working again. Would you believe that the stealer said it would only take 30 minutes to get the window closed?!? What a load of baloney!
I never thought to take pics! Dang! The problem is at the very rear of the drivers side. It's the shaft that you can see moving back and forth while looking down at the open window while closing/opening it. Way in the back, the shaft jumps of its normal position and gets caught up on a piece of aluminum that is jutting out about 1/2" from the very end. Because of the way the motor and cables work, I used a narrow screw driver and forced it (very hard) back into place as the motor gave it's initial yank. There's no way you can correct this by hand from the front unless you want to clamp onto that silver shaft and pull strait ahead. You'll probably bend that shaft or rip it to pieces. When it jumped back into it's normal position, I heard the same popping sound that I heard when it broke.
At first, I thought the tiny protruding piece of aluminum might have been caused by the system, but the passenger side has the same thing. I suspect that the main reason it even gets off track is the lack of lubricant at the rear channel. Mine had a lot of dried up grease. In places it looks like the factory lubes turned to some sort of hard epoxy like substance. It's very weird stuff. Still, if it was the lack of lubricants, that would suggest that the passenger side should also jump it's normal position, but all the posts I've read on this and other boards suggest it's only the drivers side, so it must be a design problem.
In the process of removing the interior of my rig, I discovered that when the stealer replaced this moonroof 2 years ago, they really did a lot more damage than I originally discovered. They broke several plastic covers; glued 2 covers in place (as the broke them); used self tapping screws in places that needed metal (straight) screws; and used those metal screws in self tapping areas. The also lost several of the little white clips at the back of the wall panels that hold the panels in place. What a joke! Make damn sure that you check all the work the stealer does as you might end up with a load of garbage when their done!
I'm debating whether to make this jam again and try and get a new one, or just live with it. I'm leaning to just living with it and learning a lesson about having a moon/sun roof.
