Recall notice for 2004 V6 Crankshaft seal

Anyone else get this in the mail? I'll type some of the information on the mail I got today below:

What is the potential problem?
On certain 2004 MY 4Runner V6 vehicles, the crankshaft pulley, located on the lower front-end of the engine, may have been improperly machined during the production process. It is possible that the crankshaft pulley may damage the oil seal and a small amount of engine oil may seep out.

What is included in this Limited Service Campaign?
Toyota will replace the crankshaft pulley and the oil seat at NO COST to you for a limited time. This program will be offered until May 31, 2007, and will only be available at your authorized Toyota dealer.
All terms of your Toyota Basic Warranty will remain intact regardless of whether or not you take advantage of this Limited Service Campaign. Additional details on your vehicle's Toyota Basic Warranty coverage can be found in your Owner's Warranty information booklet.



And they go on to say to make an appointment and the repair will take approximately 1.5 hours to complete. Curious if anyone else has received this, and also curious if anyone has actually had this done yet. I have not noticed any leaks yet, but may drop the bottom guard and inspect the crank pulley, see if there is some kind of interference fit or something near the seal. Must be a face seal or something if it only takes 1.5 hours to do.

I'd get it done, might be fine now but in a year or 2 who knows, but this can't be good news for the V6 and Consumers Report,

This doesn't sound very good. I'll have to call my dealer and see what they have to say (not that they're likely to know much though). Is there a place where this is posted online or can you scan your letter. I'd like to get this taken care of before Toyota gets around to sending me a letter.

I Agree, let's just call the dealer to see what can be done at this point...I haven't received any letter from Toyota yet...Thanks ScottAW for the hot tip...

I've just called the dealer's service manager...he sounded like he hasn't heard about this recall notice yet...he asked if I know the recall #....ScottAW, by any chance you have the recall # on the letter they sent you...Thanks!

DR.2B - Purchased it not quite 2 months ago, I'm not sure what the build date is, I'll take a look in a bit.

linhsy - I don't think there was a recall number on it, in fact it wasn't worded as a recall at all. Kind of strange I thought.

I'll make an appointment to get mine fixed and will post details of what I find out. Chances are my dealer won't know about it either.

The vibrations with the drive train which Lexas has fixed but Toyota has not taken care of yet.

Jst wondering how bullet proof the V6 is now if there will be any other problems before I order my vehicle.

The "F" word

Never thought I'd see the 4 letter F word used on this site. Go to the NHTSA site and compare the number of complaints, TSB's and recalls between them and Toyota. I don't care how "tough" it's "built". The quality built into the final product is just another good reason to buy a grown man's Toy! Nobody's perfect but T4R is miles ahead.

It seems strange that they offer a Limited Service Campaign. I would think if you didn't do it and then your engine goes south with 61,000 miles, you might be pretty up-set. This decision might bite Toyota in the end.

Talked to the service department. They said they heard about the recall, but have not gotten the details yet(date 4runners made, what parts to order to fix). He said letters should be sent out in about 30 days from Toyota. I don't know if he is right or not.

Limited Service Campaign (LSC) 40C is what they are using to track it. I'll keep my eyes on the mailbox for one. Its suprising that nothing was reported on NHTSA...

I've just received the LSC 40C recall letter from Toyota...the limited service campaign will offer until May 31st 2004....I just have couple days left...I will make an appointment tomorrow. FYI...my 4Runner is made 01/04....How many of you guys received this recall letters and how many of you actually take it to the dealer and have it replace the crankshaft pulley and oil seal?

No, have not done mine yet. I was going to have the 3,000 mile service performed along with this at the same time. Probably another month until that happens, although I should schedule it soon.
