Recommended Cold Air Intake for 2006 4Runner Sport

I hemmed and hawed about this myself. I broke down and picked up the TRD for $280 shipped after doing some research. I don't like K&N and couldn't find anything else that I liked priced below $300. I'll post info after I receive and install it.

As for the TDI intake, where does it get air from? It looks nice but I personally prefer a molded plastic over a metal intake. Molded plastics like the TRD have a more OEM appearance plus molded plastics have a tendency to shed heat better metal allowing the air to stay color as it enters the intake plenum.

i got mine at Burtman Industries just look up ur toyota and car and under performance. its kinda pricey compared to what others are getting it for lol. i paid around 350 or less.

the TF XDI isnt a cold air intake unfortunatly. i only grabed it because the comercial on youtube fooled me by showing the high quality filter foam lol. also plastic may shed heat but metal can absorb heat or drop temperature fast. having cold air constantly rushing in the tube also cools the metal tube. better yet on cold starts on winter day the tube even cools the air temperature lol. just my three and a quarter cents

*id take a trd with a chrome tube like k&n any day. not paying about 300 for plastic.
ps. on my first picture i was tryin to show off my headers lol, i wonder if anyone noticed

i got an AFE today for my 2004 V6 it sounds great! i recommend that one and it has an enclosed box to keep the hot air from getting in
 
I finally installed my TRD CAI last week on my '08 V6, although the weather hasn't really cooperated to allow me to open her up. I picked it up on ebay for the same $280 shipped that others here have mentioned.

I don't care for the closed box so I plan on removing the metal lid when it gets a little warmer closer to spring to see if that helps it breath a little better. As far as gas milegae is concerned, I really don't give a ratz azz. Why spend $280 to save maybe 1 or 2 MPG (and if it DID save 1-2 MPG, it would likely take almost the life of the vehicle to just break even)? I bought it for the power gain (which I truly doubt is 14 HP as they advertise; I suspect 5-8 RWHP at best without being able to properly tune for the additional air).
 
Are there any that are 50 state street legal for 04 v6? I have read that AFE's 2005 and older "should" be but want to know for sure.

Anyone have before and after photo's of the TRD CAI in a V6? Just picked up an '07 and trying to see what I have in it now.

I know exactly what you're saying, especially considering how simple and visibly efficient the stock intake is in the 4Runner. It does not impress me either that the equally as simple plastic pipe/filter/shield setups of the aftermarket are $300+.

Considering that my V6 2wd is plenty powerful enough for the 99% of the time that it's just me in it, a few extra ponies or ft lbs is vastly less important than what $300 could buy me in street-worthy suspension mods.

On the other hand, my Mazdaspeed6 has one of the most complicated and restrictive intakes in automotive history... sound deadening mostly for the turbo... but a simple Short Ram (basically a filter stuck on the MAF) yields 25awhp and 30awtq for about $180... it's a significant gain. For the 4R though, my money is better spent elsewhere.

Are there any real numbers to support the increase in power and torque? Does anybody have before/after dyno readings?
 
I posted pics of my cai install on here a few weeks ago you should check it out. Also, if you search this site theres TONS of posts (and helpful external links) of cai info which should answer all/most of your questions. I have an AFE CAI and love it. If you do the CAI post pics and info to help others on their install. Good luck.
 
hey guys, im new to t4r, but I have a 06 xsp 4runner v8, and im looking into a CAI I like the knn kits, ive looked on the knn website and im trying to get the best deal....also there are (2) diff models, the 77 and air charger...does anyone have one of each model and could tell the difference? If not its ok...

From what i read, looks like the 63- series has more HP than the 77- series. Not sure why. I love the look of the aluminum piping over the plastic. But i like more HP, and the cheaper costs.
