Regular vs premium fuel

i'm a recent 4th gen T4R owner, and i just had a look in the manual....it states that the recommend premium fuel for the v8, but 87 octane (regular) is ok. Just wondering if anyone has done a comparison for power/fuel economy.

I ran premium only in my 2003 Limited V8 for the first year that I had it. Ever since I have switched to 87 and I notice absolutely no difference in power, performance or economy.

Ditto. I'll add that I've never noticed engine ping either, which I can't say about my V8 Grand Cherokee that required at least 89 octane at sea level or it would ping like crazy under moderate load.

Theoretically, the engine management computer should advance timing (long-term trim) with higher octane fuel and this should result in more power. Since I've never noticed the difference I'll guess the difference in performance between 87 and 93 octane isn't that great for my non-VVT v8.

In my turbo cars I've noticed an enormous difference, even between one gas stations 93 octane and another -- verified via timing and knock sum logs. My t4r engine just doesn't seem that sensitive to octane levels, which is fine with me given that 93 octane is up to $4/gallon in my area.

I use 87 and it works fine. No reason to spend the extra dime for a higher octane.

I bought my 2003 V8 brand new in 2003, and have always used 87 Octane (Regular) without any problems.

i wonder if anyone dyno'd a v8 runner with the reg vs. premium?
also, i wonder if the hp claims by toyota are with reg or prem?

I run the mid grade 89 or 90 because the 87 has ethanol in it where I fill up. I would rather have the non ethanol in my tank.
