Reliability wise: new radiator or external trans cooler?

So my runner is approaching 190k miles, and i would like to do some preventative maintanence so that i dont overheat or get the dreaded pink milkshake. So which is better for this- getting an external transmission cooler (B&M) or just replacing my original radiator with a new one?

Replacing radiator then you can always add cooler later. Depends if you want to bypass. But radiator is priority. You went 190k with just radiator. You can get oem radiator at camelback Toyota Parts. I went with new radiator and added cooler.

As Mac said go for the rad.
You'll be good for another 190k at least.

You can add a cooler later if you feel it's needed.

By now your radiator is due for replacement anyway.

I'd start there.

I'd do both and run the external cooler in-series with the radiator cooler. I'd also replace the upper and lower radiator hoses, thermostat and radiator cap as well. The new radiator doesn't come with a new radiator cap.

I think the #1 priority is to replace radiator. The external cooler is a bit of excessive if you aren't doing some heavy hauling in hot hot climates.

Ok so new radiator it is- anyone have suggestions for what brand to go with? I know OEM would be good but its a bit expensive, ive seen good reviews for Denso too. $100 shipped on amazon.

Check out camelback toyota oem rad, it's cheaper than local toyota dealer. Other options are Denso and Koyorad. I have koyorad both of my 4runner and no problems.

I just did mine a few weeks ago. I replaced the OEM rad at 240,xxx with a Spectra CU1998 that I got from Amazon. I picked it up "used-like new" for 67 bucks delivered to my door. I was really worried it would be beat to shit but the gamble paid off. It was in great shape with no damage to the fins or intake and return lines. I'm not saying you'll have the same luck but 67 bucks for a new rad is, well, pretty rad.

I would say go OEM if you plan to keep this vehicle for 5 years or more.

If not, an aftermarket will work fine. I used one from oreilleys on my 97 that I knew I wasn't keeping for a long time.
