I have searched, maybe not effectively, but has anyone ever put together a technical description of 5th gen 4Runner features that contribute to its reliability?

I'm particularly interested in features that may compromise performance in favour of reliability (five speed vs. six, seven, eight speed transmission?).

Your question can't be answered as asked. If you rephrase the question to read simply "What makes the 5th gen 4Runner reliable?" then that answer is fairly simple:
Toyota simply has engineered their product to function longer than most of their counterparts with fewer problems.

You can't assume that performance is compromised in any component that Toyota did not decide to use. I mean, can your really say that a six speed transmission is higher performing than a five speed? In some cases a five speed is not as reliable as a six speed. It just depends. What is your criteria? Efficiency? Ease of use? Complexity? Cost?

Every single vehicle manufactured is a compromise in some shape, way or form. A Ferrari is not the ideal way to move people from point A to point B. Neither is it the best vehicle to go rock crawling with. A 4Runner is not the best track day vehicle nor is it the most fuel efficient.

Our 4Runners are a very reliable SUV with a robust design capable of going off road at a median price point. The whole package is what makes it reliable, not any specific component.

Just read the many endless threads on Jeep vs. Toyotas and you will get that exact discussion lol. Since nobody can see into the future all we have is history to make current decisions. When you start doing research and you quickly see Toyotas typically going 250K with no real issues I realize that the engineers who designed these vehicles are doing a good job. Is it material spec? Is it the tolerances? Is it the FEA or bearing life? I don't work for Toyota so I have no access to this information and if I did I would never be allowed to release it. What is contained in those drawings will give you the answer. Everything else is pure speculation.
 
You might also read "The Toyota Way" about their manufacturing process, which emphasizes quailty over quantity. No doubt the 4Runner also benefits from being made in the same plant (the Tahara plant in Aichi, Japan) as the Lexus GX.
 
So few mechanical problems or complaints reported on this forum that it gets kinda boring at times. I think that's a good thing!!!
