Reloading Windows

I got a used laptop with a fresh load of XP Pro. I did the rest of the Service packs and MS Office. Now it is blue screen when powering off and that causes it to boot up again. So I can't turn it off. This IBM ThinkPad will not go with F8 for 'Last known Configuration'. System restore did not help. F8 is the only way in? thanks guys.

I tried it a few times on AC power. I tried it on battery and was able to get in. This might be a speed step P4 mobile. fun times.

Its not a good idea to do service packs prior to upgrading device drivers. Try doing a fresh install of windows then upgrade device drivers first like graphics, chipset drivers, sound card etc. check for latest BIOS version as well. Then proceed with service pack.

This last Tuesday I did the updates. Drivers were loaded with Install CD. It was only about Wednesday that Windows Update saw a Radeon Driver for this 13 yr old lappy. It is still blue screen on me. I know I could delete some of the NetFrame and Silverlight stuff or delte SP-3 ?? there was a Notebook Hardware Control that works well, shows temps and CPU load. I have used this before on ThinkPads. Or look for the allternative?
I did power off OK, after the 'last known config' was used.
In and ut today, will check back soon. thanks!

Looks like a reload may be the thing. Can't find any driver updates in Add/remove. Can't find updates in C drive of video or audio. File search is evreything done in the last two days of updating. thanks. much.

Starting reloading on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Adding Office and a few more programs today. Everything looks good so far. thanks all.

Blue Screen again. Had to d/l Hirens CD again. Open the program, there is a 'burn to cd' link and hours later, nothing burned to CD. any ideas?
Ready to do a another reload, and load prgrams over a week to see just what is causing the problem. so much for this b'day present to myself being on time.
It will turn off in Safe Mood, but not in regular boot up. ???

Have you tried contacting Lenovo and seeing if you can purchase a set of factory restore discs?

If the restore partition is corrupt on the hard disc, there's really not much else you can do besides trying to reload it straight from the restore discs.

The other CDs have a Format utility on them. I am used to Formatting a HD first before using it on PCs. Think I will do a format on this lappy drive and then load it over a few days to see what is casuing the problem. I bought it , just switch drives with my older model T-30. So that is worse case senerio. Old drive is 40 GB, newer drive is 130 GB. hate to lose that.
I d/l Herins CD to desktop. ran it, it shows a burntocd icon. CD in the trya and waited 90 minutes, nothing burned. ??? (lost my other copy of this). oh life.

If I was employed full time for the last 6 years, yes all new machines in this house. Today's reload was slow and methodical. lots of reboots. XP, SP-2, IE8, SP3, MS Essentials, Spyware, Advanced system Care. So far so good. ran all utilites, no problems. happy.
