Remote Rear Window

I wonder if the rear window can be reprogrammed to operate both ways - window down as well as window up. I know that it was specifically designed to operate by remote on downward movement only to eliminate accidentally closing it while something (or someone) getting in the way of the window.

I just find it too bothersome to close it by inserting the key and switching the window down.

Posted in a thread I searched. Can't find any true answer to this. Anyone know if it can be done? Anyone had this changed?

This PDF states there is a toggle. Is it applicable to the 4gen 4R

I'm not aware of a toggle. Sorry if I'm being dense - which setting are you looking at in that file?

not my words but I kinda do agree.
It would be nice to press and hold for it to go up as well.
Probably easy for them to do it , but again some sort of legal issue would have probably arose.

Both of those settings pertain to the key in the lock, and not the wireless remote. You can disable the feature where the key operates the window.

The only setting pertaining to the wireless remote is B WINDOW OPEN in the Wireless section. You can change how long you hold the button down, press it twice, or disable the wireless open feature.

I still think you can't make the wireless remote put the window up.

Why in hell would you want to disable that?
Scenario:
You put the window down with the remote, then you have to get into the truck, key the ignition, hit button to close it. Can you say STUPID!?

Not really stupid. Most of the time the scenario is you roll it down, put your items away, get in the truck, start and drive away, closing the window on the fly.

Or...
Put the key in the hatch and turn. Also not so stupid.

I'm not disagreeing with what you want to do. The auto roll up from the remote is against FMVSS code. They can't make it that way by law. I don't know how easy it would be to "rewire" or retrofit the window control to allow it. The challenge is on.

More ridiculous government intervention.
Thanks for giving me the reason why it's not done. I appreciate knowing the facts.

But you can hit the button inside and do it. Whats the difference! The window will stop if something gets in its way, thats the way it is designed.

and I know what you're going to say... "well you could hit the button again to stop it"

I agree that there is a lot of government intervention but not sure if I would call it ridiculous when it comes to safety. There are a ton of safety regs in designing a vehicle and some of them came about from lessons learned (and the lawsuits that accompanied them.) The regs are designed to stop someone who doesn't know any better (a small child) from getting their fingers accidentily pinched off while in the vehicle.

I'm paraphrasing FMVSS 118 which allows "power operated window, partition, or roof panel systems may be closed ... Upon continuous activation of a remote actuation device provided the remote actuation device shall be incapable of closing ... from a distance of more than 6 meters from the vehicle." This doesn't apply if "While closing, the window... must reverse direction before contacting, or exerting a squeezing force..." on a test rod.
The T4R remote can work from more than 6 meters away and I'm not sure about your statement that the window is designed so that it will stop if something gets in the way. Stopping isn't good enough, it should reverse. Some vehicles have this, I'm not sure about Toyota. Point is, the person with control (the keys) should be in close proximity in case an accident happens.

So if we find a mod for this it should be easily reversible when you go to sell the vehicle.

Time to pull out the wiring diagrams...

Thanks for the great input. I did not mean to imply all the regulation are / were ridiculous. I somewhat understand the reason. In this particular case I would find it hard to have almost any child up near that rear window. So it shouldnt be a real concern. I understand what kids do. I have 2 small children. The way I was raised was if it didn't belong to you you barely looked at it let alone TOUCH it. They could apply whatever mechanism to the operation of the up cycle to stop the window on that so called rod. I'm sure for legal reasons the rear window will probably stop, but I will check when I get home. I'll have some one hit the auto up button on the dash and I will try and stop it. If my arm gets cut off you will know that this is what happened. ;):

It would be nice to roll the window back up, without having to engage the ignition.

There are quite a few instances where I would like to put something in the back and I'm not leaving.

Yes, it would be nice. In the meantime use the key in the hatch.

Here are my findings:

The good news: I still have my arm!

The rear window stops and reverses a tad when you prevent it from going up. It does not reverse like the sunroof

The sunroof stops and reverses when you try and stop it.

The driver window is impossible to stop on its upward auto travel.

It does stop. Again I'm sure for legal reasons.

Actually this isn't true. I tried to stop the window while it was low. It seems if you try and stop it from near the top of its travel it indeed does stop and reverse. The reverse isn't actually a full reverse. The window will reverse a few inches then stops.
