Remote Start - After Dead Battery

The other night, I sat in my Runner and talked on the phone with my buddy (using hands free) for about an hour. I had originally turned off the car, and then turned it back on to where the mic/electronics worked. Once I got out, I turned the 4Runner off, locked, and went inside.

Came out the next morning and the battery was "dead". Battery is 2 months old, so I thought that was strange. I jumped it with my wife's Escape, and went to work. That afternoon, I went to remote start the Runner and it wouldn't even try. I have a 2016 SR5 Premium with factory remote start, btw.

I have read a bunch of threads that had somewhat similar problems, but had other factors thrown in like running LED headlight replacements, aftermarket remote starts, etc.

Is this a common thing? I haven't done any mods to my truck, that would hinder the remote start.. so I am drawing a blank as far as what the cause could be.. other than the battery. Truck is 100k mile bumper to bumper warranty, so I am not that worried about taking it in. Just wanted to make sure that my thought process on the reason why the remote start wont work, was feasible.

Does the battery have any juice in it? Lights come on at least? Does it click or sound too weak or does it not make any noise to try and crank at all? What brand battery did you get and your original battery only last a couple years?

I’m asking because it could be a defective battery and coincidental that you had it on the other night. Maybe your connections are loose and not getting enough contact to crank it. If you killed the battery once that’s understandable but a repeat tells me there’s likely another issue to look for. I doubt it has to do with remote start. My only issue with remote start not working is if I hit the 3 times too fast it doesn’t work.

Batteries don't like being totally drained, and it's quite possible you've damaged it.

Take it out and to an Autozone, or such, and get it tested. It may even be possible a deep charge will resurrect it - alternators do not do this.

Curious how you have a 2016 with a 2 mo old battery?

When I first got my new 2011, I was out in the drive way listening to the radio "Party Mode On" for about 2 hours. We were washing it, detailing the wheels, interior, setting up the presets on the radio and Nav, etc. We were just playing around with a new rig as any new T4R owner would.

When I got back in to fire it up and move it for the night, BAM, dead battery. It wouldn't even crank over the engine. (Lost all my carefully planned presets to!!)

So I jumped it and let it run for about 15 minutes and moved it for the night. The next morning I was prepared to jump it again and drive straight to the dealership, but it cranked over and started, so I just drove to work like normal.

It worked fine for a couple years until I went with a dual battery system and a G31 for the main battery.

That original OEM Panasonic battery is now in my 3rd Gen and still works fine 7 years later. However, It's probably time for me to swap that out...

i noticed that after having my battery disconnected for an hour or so while doing some electrical work that i had to key-start the 4Runner prior to the oem remote start operating.
have you tried the remote start again since key-starting your truck? or just the one time after jump starting it?
