I am not completely positive but according to the install instructions I think you're going to need the techstream software and cable to complete the setup. Installing it otherwise is just removing a bunch of panels and pretty much all plug and pray.
Have you looked into aftermarket alternatives? I've heard many downfalls of the factory remote start such as short range, shuts off when you open the door etc...of course that's all hearsay, but enough to deter me from bothering with it.

I think there is a PDF of the instructions floating around on the forum.. It might be under Nashman's .ZIP file of goodies for the 5th gen. I think you also need techstream to program something as well.
Some people might steer you towards an aftermarket remote start. These factory ones are limited compared to their aftermarket counterparts. I'm not sure if this applies for the Trail but on the Limited, the engine cuts power as soon as you open the door to drive away requiring another restart.
I was looking at these last night and there was a Part number that was 89100 which I guess is either for 2010s or was replaced with the P/N you posted.
Just a side note: I was looking at getting these for the 4Runner and another vehicle... What struck me as odd was that a Lexus remote engine starter was cheaper than then 4Runner one. What happened to that "Luxury" tax???:lmao:
Wish Toyota would address this and bring the remote start system up to par with other makers... love the feature on my wife's vehicles through her work. Its nice year round either to cool off or heat up the vehicle. Never has unlocking the doors shut the engine off with any of the makes she routinely gets... seems like an unnecessary stress on the starter?
Was that a misstype or legit?? LOL :lmao: beacuse that is how I feel sometimes...*cross your fingers and hope the dash doesn't light up like an Xmas tree.

Lots of panel and dash disassembly and then you need TIS to program it.
I have done EXTENSIVE research over the last couple weeks looking into getting the remote start for my 2010 LE. After calling dealerships and aftermarket installers I decided on the OEM option for a number of reasons even with its negative reviews in other threads on here. I found the official Toyota install instructions on a thread here and it looked fairly simple plug and play but having it programmed at the dealership would be a requirement. I stopped into a dealership and they told me if I installed it they would do the programming for $95.00. I did some quick math and realized if I bought the parts online it would cost around $300 then the install time I would invest then $95 for programming and I would be in around $400. I had a good talk with the parts department and he said he would sell me the part for $350 instead of he $399msrp and he would have it installed for $500 even...for an extra $100 over what it would cost me seemed like a no brainier! Having the dealer install it tomorrow morning and gonna have them shut off e seatbelt chimes, I'll update when it's done. Make sure you shop around, one dealer quoted me over $700 and another said e remote start was not sold for my vehicle.
I have the Trail Edition and it cuts off too... drives us crazy. Is there a work around to disable the engine kill when unlocking the doors?

Yeah, I went through a headache and a half with a Viper alarm/remote start. Not sure if the alarm or the install quality was the culprit, but ended up having to pay the dealer to uninstall the alarm and ended up replacing the ECU (under warranty, thankfully). As far as alarms and remote starts, I'd go OEM or not at all, and this is coming from a guy with tons of other aftermarket stuff on his truck.

I have the OEM on my 2010 LE and once you know it has the cutoff and accept it, its a great feature here in the NW. I dont have a problem starting it from my apt 5 min or so before I leave and its nice and toasty.
There is no work around to disable it.
The one thing I wish would stay on is the de-icer, so I could leave it on at night so it would kick on when it started, but its on a timer once pushed.

This OEM remote start system only fits 2012 and 2013 4Runners.
There has to be an “ECU communication ID” to enable it.
I have the instructions from considering it. Just never got around to buying it.

You probably have that impression because that’s how old this post is.
The new part number PT398-89140. Be sure to confirm.
I had the OEM Remote Start option installed from the factory and removed it for the Accessorides option so I didn't have to start it again after opening the door.
The module and harness extends to the passenger side which requires pulling the driver and passenger side panels along with the whole center console removed to route and secure the wires.
Ultimately I would suggest going with the "Plug & Play" offerings like Accessorides and 12Volt Solutions.

Does anyone know the part number for the 2020-2022 models?
parts.toyota.com and the other common online catalogs show PT398-89140 as valid for 2012-2019 only. I actually can't find a part number that reports being valid for 2021 or 2022.

Go with a 3rd party. Like this install of Accessorides.
1) The install is WAY easier by any measure - panels and airbags removed, wires run, etc.
2) The functionality is better. The car doesn't shut off when you open the door.
3) It was cheaper when I bought mine.

I just installed the 12volt solutions remote start took 15minutes works great
