Remote start

So winter is approaching and even though it doesn't get all that cold here, I want remote start. But, I want to be able to use it from my oem key fob...I was thinking maybe use the rear window down button to do it, cause I never use the window down button anyway so I'd be fine with losing that function . I've searched and it seems everyone has to use some sort of aftermarket key fob which I don't want to do. Anyone have any clue where to start with this project? Or am I dreaming too hard..

I have remote start by Avital. The model number is 4003 and you can have it programmed to your factory key fob. I have programmed so that when you press the lock button three times it'll start the car. The only down side with that is that once car has been started your key fob is disabled. In other words you'll have to unlock the car by using the key. Also the range of the remote start is limited to the range of your factory key fob. This was not an issue for me but may be for you. Had it for almost a year with no issues. As far as I know its the only remote start that can be programmed to the factory fob. Hope this helps.

Been thinking about getting a remote start. How do you get around the immobilizer? Did you just tape a physical key near the sensor in the dash? I thought all 4runners had them, but I could be wrong. I know my V8 does and while I love knowing you can't steal my truck, I have always wanted a remote start and live now in a very safe area where the risk of theft is very low.

Also, the key fob you got: can you program any key? I like the idea of doing the unlock button 3 times.

I like the sound of that. Can you program it to any button you want? How hard was the install?

ive got remote start on my my 85 sr5. it sure would be nice to have it on the much newer 06.

You can program it to any of the three buttons I am pretty sure. I wouldn't recommend programming it to the unlock button tho because then your runner will be running and unlocked allowing someone to open the door and steal anything inside. You need the key in the ignition turned to the ON position in order to put the car in gear. Without the key, as soon as you touch the brake it kills the engine. [MENTION=8542]DCRunner[/MENTION] you also need to get a bypass module that will allow the remote start to function without needing to have a spare key taped to the dash. I thought about doing the install myself but decided to have it installed by a shop. I've seen write ups on remote start installs on here if you search for them. The actual remote start didn't come with clear instructions if I remember correctly. As for the bypass module, you can find them on amazon for around $30. The shop that did the install used Directed XpressKit DBALL2 but I think PKALL makes one and I am sure there are many more out there.

Nope. You read it right....unlock. I don't need it locked and running. I don't want to have to use the key to open it as I walk to my driveway...

Wow I thought I was just dreaming, but I seriously may have to do this. It's this or heated seats, but you still have to wait a while for the heated seats to warm up anyways on the cold days. [MENTION=100938]acronin2[/MENTION] , If you don't mind me asking, how much did install cost?

I got a pretty good deal, I paid around 180 for the install which included the $30 bypass module. I provided the installer with the Avital 4003 remote start whcih was around 50$. So the total cost was around 230$ which compared to some other quotes was pretty good. I'd shop around for the install because some shops were charging 300-400 just for the install.

I have been looking into adding heated seats but haven't found a set that looks close enough to OEM as far as the switches. Let me know if you find any
