Remote Start

Hi everyone. Can someone tell me if its possible to have the factory remote start settings changed? My 2015 limited has a factory remote starter but once I hit the unlock button on the keyfob the vehicle shuts off. Is it possible to change it so the vehicle will keep keep running?

Thanks to Toyota lawyers you're stuck with that BS until you ditch the factory crap for an aftermarket system. You're also stuck without the rear defrost or windshield heaters coming on (aftermarket optional).
I made the switch last winter when my factory unit died and have been pleased with the system since. Lots of guys are going with DroneMobile (cell phone based), but I went with CompuStar T11 Pro. No annual fees, and works when truck or I don't have cell reception.

Hi Jason,

That's an anti-theift feature Jason... if anyone else gets in your vehicle, they cannot drive it away without the key fob! ENJOY!

Why do modern "features" end up being less useful than the frustration they cause?
Wouldn't the vehicle shut off after a few hundred feet or less without the key/fob inserted to operate the vehicle after taking control from the remote start?

Nope. You can drive your truck as far as you want without the key fob on you or in the truck.

I have been driving domestic full-size trucks from Ford and GM and the last 10 or so have had remote start. None shut the truck off when you unlock the door to get in and yet they also can't be driven until the key is inserted or the key fob is detected inside the truck.

I just tried to drive off in my 2016 F150 Platinum after using the remote start and then leaving the key fob outside the truck. The transmission won't shift out of park and the steering will not function.

I don't believe that the truck would shut off at any point once the 'Engine Immobilizer' was satisfied that all security measures had met the anti-theft design protocol! In other words... once the vehicle is running, if it stayed running no other attempts are made to stop the 4Runner; hence the additional safety shut-down!

My wife has a Dodge Charger with factory installed remote start. It has a smart key and push-button start as well. When we start her car, it stays running. It just won't let you put it in gear without getting in with the key fob, stepping on the brake and pushing the start button again. It only shuts down if we try to put it in gear without going through the sequence.

The technology is out there, why can't Toyota do something similar?

The factory remote start is definitely frustrating. Until this 4Runner I had never heard of a remote start that shuts the car down when you unlock the doors. Ever. I don't think there is another one. Most are like my wife's jeep and like those mentioned above: remote start, get in car, and must insert key or have fob in range to drive off. No need to shut down. That is a silly and frustrating unnecessary feature of Toyota.

Yeah... My father-in-law and my wife both ask about my remote start every time I use it in Colorado Winters or Texas Summers. Being the first vehicle I have owned with remote start, it doesn't bother me until they say something.

Once I win the lottery I will probably go with a Compustar system of remote start and vehicle security.

My wife had an Acura MDX with the OEM remote start. It worked in the same stupid way that the Toyota one does.

We bought it used, and I must have read the manual 10 times because I was positive there was something I was missing or doing wrong.

check out the link below. looks like you can add a compustar ezgo on an existing factory remote start to bypass the annoying shut off on the Toyota vehicles.
