Remote Start

Okay getting back into this after the holidays.

I set up a bench test using a spare deep cycle battery. Went ahead and threw it on the charger till I got the green light just to be safe.

Connected 2x red power +12V, connected 1x black chassis ground connection, then connected the pink IGN wire to +, entered remote programming mode, and.............same exact issue.

However improbable, I am 100% confident that Crimestopper has a bad batch of these units and they're getting returned. I've tried several times over the past few weeks to get Crimestopper on the phone but they don't answer and they don't respond to voice mail either.

Does someone want to recommend a new remote start system for me to try?

I haven’t responded because you’d said the 12Volt solution system was too expensive. While I agree it is pricey, mine is nice.

It was all 100% plug and play which is nice, but it was very bulky trying to hide all the wires and plugs.

I bought mine on the Black Friday 25% off sale a couple months ago, which is why I finally bought one after years of hemming and hawing.

I also bought the module for it. It’s pretty cool and you can track it on a map at any time and also you have an app to start/stop/etc… on your phone.

Let me know if you have any questions about it if it becomes in your price range. At this point you’ve dealt with a ton of shit trying to save money which does suck and I feel for you.

FWIW, I had operator error issues while programming it and was totally my fault. I did try calling 12Volt solutions quite a few times and never got an answer. Don’t recall if I emailed as I was needing to talk to them.

Unfortunately this is how a lot of companies are nowdays given the Electronic era and after Covid hit, customer service went downhill fast.

I missed a step and it would not start, but did everything else. Once I did the programming sequence correctly, it worked just fine lol.

Still too expensive! At this point though I have all the truck's wiring tapped and ready to go so I could probably pop a new remote start in in 15 minutes or so. Just need to find a unit that works lol..

just get a compustar unit, you can upgrade the remotes for longer distance. install the alarm and remote start combo.

What unit should I get (I don't care about alarm)?

check your inbox, but I use the cmx brain and t12 remotes, also subscribe to the drone service. you don't have to go all out yet.

my brain has the ability to be a stand alone remote start, or alarm only mode, that's why I just enable all the features, so i have both the alarm and remote start.

Wrapped up my remote start saga this morning, figured I'd write an update. First off ABSOLUTELY MASSIVE THANKS to riceandpho for selling me a used unit at what is certainly below-market rate, and offering advice throughout. I owe you big dude!

First off, addressing the THREE units I purchased before getting something that works; yes I was in fact correct to diagnose them as faulty. Who would have thought! Three units from two brands all bad; of course made even worse by the fact that both companies (I will name names here): Viper and Crimestopper refused to provide customer support. I'm not sure what was up with the Viper unit but the Crimestopper units, due to having identical failures (no signal from remotes) points to a bad batch. It makes me queasy to think about the man-hours wasted if this is a large batch of bad units. Anyway, both companies get 0/5 stars and can ********** for wasting a huge amount of my time and not even trying to work with me--even worse when the problem was on their end and not mine.

Anyway, I got the Compustar unit in, hooked it up which took all of five minutes because I had already tapped most of the wires in the car from the previous attempts, and hit the start button on the remote and the car immediately cranked. Of course it didn't start on account of the immobilizer, but sticking a key nearby the ignition allowed it to start, confirming another theory; you can bypass having a bypass if you're willing to ziptie a spare key up by the ignition.

In the end, because I got a bypass I didn't end up needing to do that. I do think I would recommend paying extra for a bypass because it will prevent your car from being hotwire-able. I live in a state with low crime and a county with zero crime, so this is not much of a concern but for some folks probably matters.

Moving on. Wires in the car were mostly easy to access with a couple minor exceptions. Accessing the lock/unlock wires required removing the dead pedal and left bottom kick panel, breaking a clip on the dead pedal. There was just barely enough room after unplugging the target harness and the one it was attached to to tap. For whatever reason, the wire colors DID NOT match the 4runner remote start guides that are all floating around. I ended up just rigging a GND wire and testing pins by trial and error till I located them. Simple enough.

Keysense wire; remote start guides show this color wrong as well. Actually I don't think it's "wrong" it's just that where it's most easy to access it's not the color listed in the guides. This thread:

How to: 4th gen '05 Remote Start Install

Shows how to locate the keysense wire.

Finally, rear-window-roll-down. Kind of a extra credit item but if you are like me you use the feature a fair bit. This took some experimenting and I ended up with getting the feature to work with a simple caveat; the car needs to be remote started before the button will work. This is okay to me because the scenarios in which I use it (store parking lot, walking up with items to stow), I can just start the car first.

The reason for this is I tapped the "window down" button. I know there is a better route but this was easiest for me as I'm only so-so at automotive electronics. The basic solution was:

[Compustar Brainbox] -> aux wire with negative trigger -> relay -> 12V+ -> window roll down switch wire

In other words, the relay takes in a negative signal from the remote start unit and outputs 12V+ into a pin on the window roll switch in the middle of the dash. I figured this out by jumping wires on the switch plug until I figured out which ones actuated the window. The relay was just a standard automotive relay, and because I never remember which pins are which on a relay I just sat there with my multimeter playing with it till I figured out the correct pinout for GND, 12V+, -trigger, 12V+ switched output. I'm sure there are a myriad other ways to implement this feature but this is what worked for me.

Hopefully some of the details in here will help anyone searching the forums for remote start help. BTW I would add that if any of this stuff sounds like too much for you, wiring up one of those 1 button units without door lock support or rear window rolldown, would be downright easy as there are vastly fewer wires to tap, and they're all directly within like 4" of the ignition cylinder.

also there is a pit stop feature, lets say you need to run to store and leave the truck running on a hot day with a/c or heater for cold days.

park your truck like normal. leave it running, hit the remote start button, you'll get the same remote start confirmation, then you take the key out and it'll stay running for that 15 minutes.
remember to lock/arm your car with the remote. siren and shock sensor is all there for you to use, also horn wire to tap to for the extra sound.

enjoy your system. maybe you'll be able to go to the other settings to make it work without the truck running for the window to roll. hope you redid that ground wire, the nut contact is not really enough. you have a better spot to the right of that area.

Ah yes the pit stop feature was a favorite from my last car. One of the first things I tested out with this new remote start system, works exactly as expected.

hows the remote start holding up?

have you decided to upgrade to a longer range remote from your 1500ft AM?
the 3000ft FM is pretty standard upgrade.

Compustar RF-2WQ9-FM T9 2-WAY 3000-FT LCD Remote + 1WG15R-FM Remote Up

you might be able to use the 3 mile range too with this
Compustar RF-2WT12-SS 2WT11R-SS 2-Way 3-Mile LCD Remote + 2WG15R-SS Up

also here the option programmer if you decide to get it.
FirstTech OP500 Compustar Programming Device FT-OP500 Option Programme

at this point, if you do decide to upgrade to a new one with remotes and another bypass and brain.
Compustar CS2WQ900-AS 2-Way 3000-FT Range Remote Start Security + BLAD

you will need a weblink programmer to update the brain firmware and flash the bypass. you can also wire the current bypass to this.

Great, with a couple minor issues. Main one is sometimes it just refuses to unlock after a successful remote start. Remote reports that it unlocked, but the truck remains locked, and I have to use the physical key to get in. Pretty sure it's not a loose wire but hard to say. I need to figure out of the relay is clicking or not when this occurs but it's uncommon so its gonna be hard to debug.

Other issue is the remote buttons are way too sensitive and trigger themselves in my pocket.

Do you know if the newer remotes are less touchy? Would be worth buying if so.

could be a bad connection at the areas you tap into. check the lock and unlock wires, i usually just strip a little, and then thread the wire in, then wrap it around and solder if you can. you can also thread it in, wrap it with tape, and secure it with a zip-tie. you probably need to open up that plastic sheathing more.
also check the wires thats plug in at the brain, maybe its loose.

check the ground connection for resistance. there is a ground connection by the kick panel behind all the wires lower left.

also after remote start from remote, wait for confirmation at the remote, then give it a few seconds, and you can use the remote for all function.

you might be able to look for a case for that remote.

does your problem occur with no remote start activated?
check the key sense wire on the bypass too.

i had a bad connection before with the lock and unlock wires, just redo them, pretty sure there is enough wire to cut off another inch.

Pretty confident its not the wires I tapped. It did it again yesterday and I got in and tried to listen for the relay but I was foiled because the unit thought it was unlocked and when I re-locked it and then unlocked it everything worked. Still investigating...

Nice. I don't do ebay but maybe I can find it for sale somewhere else.

I believe this has only occured after using the remote start but I'll have to pay closer attention.

The bypass so far has been absolutely flawless so I have no reason at this moment to distrust the connections with it.

Right now everything works "good enough" to not tear my dash back apart. I'll get back into it at some point but probably when combined with another project like backup camera or AC evap replacement.

i still check your unlock wires, also i wonder if you accidently put it in valet mode.

did you make sure all the unused wires are not touching ground? hood pin , tach sense, get the tach at the odb2 connector.

i only set the unlock part for double pulse, so it can unlock all locks for you. change where you use that ground to the other part of the bracket. not through plastic.

not sure howd you did all your connection, but you can still text me. i have send you more info and links as guides. the pictures from the12volt is pretty good.

Following up on this, ended up resolving my intermittent signal failures.

I kept having issues, kept having issues, finally the unlock button on the 2-way remote just quit working entirely. This was fun since I had to open the door with the key and then when I started the car it freaked out thinking it was stolen, trying to flash the parking lights and making the remote play a siren. Very annoying.

I ended up switching to the 1-way remote all all problems immediately vanished. Works fine now.

I don't think the actual button went bad on the remote though, the way it was acting, it was almost like there was a board level failure like tin whiskers or a failed cap or something.

Either way, thing works great now.

I will now be un-installing the unit as I go to replace my AC lol. Thank GOD I used removable connections on everything! I plan on reinstalling it and adding the brake pedal sense as that is a nice safety and convenience feature I omitted on the original install and then regretted. Probably wire up a toggle switch to disable the entire unit while I am at it also, for situations like taking it into a shop.

if your t-taps are not good, they will give weak connections, surprised you didn't hook both the hood and brake wires, they are the safety shutdowns, if you decide to upgrade to a farther range remote, the fmx system works fine, you just don't get the led in the antenna to flash, but i have included external led, the system you have is a full alarm and remote start combo, that's why it came with shock sensor and siren. if you want to take apart your current remote, its usually a screw, might be under the battery cover or sticker.
