Just keep this in mind - when you remove double decker you not going to have a flat floor anymore. Very useful if you happen to sleep in your truck on camping trips.

Interesting ... at 6'1", I don't seem to stretch out enough to be able to sleep comfortably in my truck, but I'd still like for the floor to relatively flat. Are you saying that if I removed the double-decker and replace interior panel with the correct panel it will still not be flat? Is there some other difference between the two that needs to be taken into account? Or are all trucks w/o double-decker not flat?

That is a good question. I didn't know you can replace DD with other panel. I found out the hard way after pulling out DD and throwing it in the trash bin. Next day I had to do some trash bin diving to recover my DD and installing it back. I never use it but flat floor is must for me.
Take out the rear seat bottoms and you will have space. I am 6'3" and fit just fine in the rear with the rear seat bottoms out. I don't do the offroad thing, but do sleep in the back when the weather is nice when I'm at race tracks. Saves a hotel stay and is pretty convenient with no driving anywhere!

Thanks ... I've never considered that, will have to look into it. Under normal circumstances I don't have a problem sleeping in a tent, but there are certainly occasions that it would be a lot simpler to sleep in the 4Runner.

I removed mine and instead of buying the like $120 trim panel just spent like $20 on some plywood and carpeting then used some metal bent at an angle. I'll post a pic if you're interested.

I roll with just the wide seat removed and some high density foam semi-permanently in place. A cheap cooler perfectly fills the space behind the front passenger seat to extend the platform beyond the folded seat back.
Have slept in the truck well over 100 times and I still get a kick out of hooking a leg over the rear driver's side seat back and spinning myself around followed by a sideways shove and then the pleasant thump of a perfect landing in the seat.
The simple pleasures.

Sorry it took me so long I was out of town all break and never sat down at a computer.
That's 1/8" thick metal that I bent with a vice, hand clamps, and a mallet. Then some plywood and Kraco Carpeting ($10 at O'Reily).
All in all it probably cost me $20 vs like $120 or whatever for the OEM trim piece.
I see you're in Atlanta like me. It's mainly grocery getters down here.
I removed the DD from my girl's 06 and have yet to find a solution to the gap. I did get her a Husky liner for back there (we have two Labrador retrievers) so you can't see it, but I would like a better solution. I am open to a deal for somebody that is interested.
In regards to removing it, it is simple and takes a few minutes.

Interesting ... so does the metal bracket simply act as a support to hold the plywood at the correct height? And do you have the bolted onto the metal bracket? If so, do you think a longer bolt could be used so that you could bolt straight through to the body?
This is why I like muscarellaw's solution above ... it's cheap and would usually be covered by my weathertec cargo liner.
Can't say if the new trim would be flat (although it seems like it should), but can say that unless you can find it used, part # 58401-35010 seems to be running about $181 or so ... plus it's possible that you would need two additional trim pieces (64721-35020) that run about $16 each. It is bolted to the plywood and it is used to support and hold it at the right angle. I don't think you could use one bolt because of the angle. One thing, if you're planning on trying this put the bolts in before you bend it.
