Removing running boards on 04

husereju.jpg

off topic, but what kind of rims do you have there?

:nono: I dont know why somebody would want to do that, its a most usefull part of the truck, I us it everyday, dozens of times. Without them you have to be a gymnast to crawl inside. I can see some people get rid of them for offroading. Particulary Limiteds have nice looking color matched set with aftermarket LEDs looks not as plain and boring as without them
To each their own. Depends on how tall you are, if your rig is lifted, tire size, etc.. I'm 6'2" and tr4 is still at the stock height. For me, those running boards are completely useless. Actually they are worst than useless because like the other guy, I tend to get crap on the back of my pants from them when stepping out, especially this time of year and I do think most 4runner look better with them off. The only reason mine are still on is my wife is only 5'3" and finds the step and grab handles very useful

Took mine off. I never used em and I always got crap on my leg from em

iirc, it was 6 12mm bolts per side plus one electronic connector (limiteds have lighted boards. )

Looks sweet without them. This is my next after-dark (after work) task. Thanks

Hell, it could be a quick before work job, took me all of 20 minutes and only that long because I kept having to spit out dirt, the rain had turned my road into a mud hole.

Sorry to post up on an older thread but I couldn't find any newer ones about the running boards. I just purchased a 2006 Limited and I'm really interested in removing the running boards but I see they have lights on the front and back of them...guessing this is a Limited feature. So if I choose to remove them what kind of electrical problems will I be running into? Thanks all, really excited to be a part of the 4 Runner community!

Remove them, cut, and cap the wire. Should have no issues if you seal up the end and tuck it away in the frame hole it comes from.

I decided to use the wire and install Rock Lights on either side.
Lights up the whole ground when you walk up and unlock the truck. Even retains the Dimming ON/OFF feature.

Welcome to the fam!

I love that idea, I appreciate that!

A little before and after when the wife and I bought our 4runner a few years ago. I'm 6'0" and she's 5'4". We both hated the steps. We always hit our shins or ankles getting in and out. We kept the steps for whatever reason and may put them back on when our 6 month old grows up a little bigger, to help him get in and out.

Put the bolts back in the bottom of the T4R so you don't get water and mud into the holes...rust prevention.

Thanks for the help guys, removed by the running board today and I LOVE the looks. Not an 04, but here is before and after pics my 06.

Just pulled my running boards - really like the look! Thanks to all on this thread, especially the pro tip for putting the bolts back in the original holes. . .

Yep, just removed them on our 04 and it is surprising how much it changes the look. I threw the bolts back in as well, I have to imagine that will help slow down rust at least a little bit.
