Removing Rusted Door Ding Guard

I don't see this door strip on other people's 4Runners and I want to find out how to get it off mine. It looks like there's some sort adhesive holding it on.

I searched the forum, but couldn't find any mention of this (I'm probably using the wrong name for it). Can anyone tell me what this is called and how to remove it without damaging the paint underneath?

Well, since I didn't get any replies on this I used my Google-Fu to widen my search for information. I ended up leaving it out in the hot Texas sun all day and using Turtle Wax tar and bug remover. The tar remover definitely broke down the adhesive making it easier to remove the ding strip, but much harder to get all the adhesive off the 4Runner. On the front door, I just pulled it off without the tar remover and almost all the adhesive came off the car with the ding strip.

It turned out really well. I was expecting the paint to be noticeably different after 14 years of no sun, but I can't even tell where the strip was before.
