Removing XM radio from dash, will it hurt my resale value

Hello,

I'm thinking about pulling out my 6cd changer that came from the factory. I would replace it with a new Alpine CDA-9856 reciever. It is really nice, and I can make the stearing wheel controls change channles on it. I can also hook an IPOD up to it. Here is a link to it.

The problem is I had an XM radio that was already screwed into my dash. The mount was about half way up centered below the air conditioning vent between the glove box and the radio. There are going to be 4 small holes in my dash from the screws. As a result, I've got a few questions for you guys

1. Is there any quick fix for small screwdriver holes in the dash

2. How much would it cost to order a new dash piece?

3. There is going to be a space below the radio in the dash...do you guys think it would look bad? Is there anything out there that could fill that space and look cool?

4. Finally, do you think I could sell my 6cd stock cd changer that came for the factory and make any money off of it?

I know this is a lot of stuff, but it's a big purchase, thanks in advance!!

Get the part number for the dash piece and go to www.parts.com and do a search for your year and then the part number and you should get a price. Don't think there is anything you can do about holes in it

You could sell the stereo on ebay (or here) I am sure, don't know how much you would get though..you can always do a search and see if anyone else is selling one.

When putting in the new player you hace a couple options with the space, you can center your new player between the two dins (toyta 6disc is a double din stereo, whereas the alpine you are getting will be a single din) and build a plastic piece to cover the holes top and bottom. Companies also make pockets that you can insert into the space below the cd player(alpine), I did that in my mustang, don't know what company makes them I had my local shop install it. Don't know how much of an audiophile you are but having come from a stereo with an aftermarket EQ and now not having one I know I will be hooking it back up soon...makes a world of difference. Thanks, that was very informative. That equalizer is a really good idea. I'd rather pay a little more for style rather than have an ugly space sitting there.

It looks like 6cd changers are going for about $100 on ebay. Do you know if the 4Runner's radio will work in any car or just Toyota?

I'm thinking istead of buying an entirely new piece just getting a cell phone holder or something. What do you think?

The radio should work in any double din cd player slot, unless something is funny about the toyota player...but it should be fine.... When yous say getting a cell phone holder instead of a new piece...what do you mean by new piece?

Which radio do you have? If it's the non JBL it'll probably work in other Toyotas and maybe Scions. How well it'll fit and if there are gaps will be questionable. The JBL will probably only work with some Toyotas that have a JBL system, because the JBL systems have a seperate amp. Also for the JBL system, Toyota has some models with an analog out and others with a digital out. My guess is the non JBL system might work on another make, if you were asking that. But would someone with a non-Toyota want a Toyota radio in their dash, I don't know.

You didn't say what your plans are for your 4Runner. If you're keeping if for a long time and the holes doesn't bother you, I'd just leave it. If you have plans for selling it, I would replace that trim. Personally, I don't like a car that's been altered and then returned stock but traces of the alteration are still visible. Alternatively, you can keep the stock radio and the XM radio. When you sell the truck, put the stock radio back and the XM radio in to cover up the holes.

When I was refering to a cell phone mount I was talking about putting a cell phone mount on the dash where the XM radio was......in other words its a cheap solution rather than buying an entirely new dash piece. Think that would work???

I've got the JBL audio in my car with a 6disk cd changer. I checked on ebay and I think I could cell the stock radio and xm equipment and make about $150 which I would put towards the new radio.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with my 4runner. It's an awesome vehicle, but the gas mileage is a factor. I'll probably sell it eventually and get something with better gas mileage, but not for a couple years at least. I think by then there will be some new latest and greatest thing that I would want to get.

Oh ok, a new dash piece, sorry I was just confused...yeah that would work, but you probably wouldn't be able to find one that fit the existing holes, so you would probably be making new ones....


Also, Uneek has a good point about just keeping the existing radio and xm unit, that way if you do sell it you can uninstall your Alpine and reinstall the JBL and XM. The alpine will add almost nothing to resale value but having the JBL 6-Disc I am sure would...so when you think about it $150 bucks for the factory JBL headunit isn't really that much considering a comparable 6 disc aftermarket unit would probably run you at least 300 bucks. 6 disc changers are expensive, I priced them once and I was shocked.

Personally I would keep the JBL and XM in a box and when I was ready to sell the car I would reinstall it. I sold my factory stereo from my mustang to help pay for my aftermarket stereo and looking back I wish I hadn't.
