I went to Firestone for a oil change and got robbed :wtf: The seals on the passanger side rear axel failed again and needed to be replaced, Bearing & Seals with ABS Ring $434.43. High Millege oil change cost $34.69. Rear Break service $144.99 because oil all over the break pads. 4 Bridgestone Deuler AT with Uni-T package,road hazard protection $677.20, the Deulers these replaced were 12 years old. Alignment Serivec was $64.99, needed it because old tire was wearing on inner driver side. Grand total $1476.76 with a saving of $257.64 in specials. First time i can remeber when the parts cost more then the labor, $955.30 parts, $401.00 in labor, $4.00 shop supplies and $116.46 tax.

The car drives so much better with new tires :bigok: but i already had the seals replaced on both axels few years ago at Meineke but i leave them to only doing mufflers because whenever they did the oil i had to add oil but not when Firestone did it. The guy said my old tires still had meat on them but the dry rot made them dangerious to drive on.

I'm happy:biggrin2: was just wondering what everyone thought of the cost. And i had teeth filled today and just spent three weeks in bed with a painfull back injury so don't care about my sentence strusture :lol:

Just paid $149.95 for one side of rear axle bearings. So $300 for both. And then $40 per side pressed on, so $380 total. Plus $12 in seals. So that brings my cost to $392. I think you got a good deal IF they used toyota parts. Doubt they did, as I don't think they'd do it for $42.

The rear brake was a rape fest. Shoes from the dealer cost $65 or so. And you should have a few rear brake tools.

Tires are tires. 12 years and how many miles? Either way, you needed tires!

For $34 you could have done synthetic oil and then changed it in 9k mi.

BUT, the thing you have to remember is getting all the parts you need, the time, and the know how (I am trying to build that now), it is worth it because you could afford it and now your vehicle is reliable again. And then you would need to have tools, jacks, jack stands, etc. All that stuff initially adds up.

So don't feel ripped off.

You got new tires and a vehicle ready to roll for another 50k mi!

Don't feel riped off just glad it's fixed right :bigok:. I took auto mechanics in high school but that was along time ago and at 51 not into taking time to do things right anymore :nono:. The first pair of Deulers cost me $95 a tire at Costco but that was 12 years ago :naughty:.

I know Firestone might charge little more but i have been happy with their work unlike Meineke. My sister has a Camery and they changed the OC sensor like three times in her car and the light keeps going on when tank is less than half full :wtf:, someone said it's the gas cap leaking pressure. They tried to stop a oil leak in her timing cover with cork and keep changing valve cover gaskets and charging $89 saying it was that :whip2:. I think she will be using Firestone also from now on. :bigok:

Axle Breather...

If your seals are going that quickly, I would replace your axle breather... Perhaps even buy a relocation kit... If that is not the problem, you could have bearings that are not up to par...

On another note, if you want to see a wallet stabbing for your parts + an entire rear axle housing along with a bunch of "since I have this apart", "while I am in there", and "well, if I have gone this far" items, check out my repair thread...

I am sure, as per usual, folks on here will tell you not to listen to me, while jumping down my throat singing about how I could have saved money going to a salvage yard...blah...blah..blah...

There may have been cheaper routes, but none better for me - save for buying some serious rock crawler aftermarket parts - but then they would not complain about the cost...they would just be jealous...

Where in NY do you live, and wtf, you never go to Firestone or Mieneke or any chain shop, go to a reccomended independent shop, atleast it will be a quality job and parts.

Glad you are happy with it. Because i find it hard to feel sorry for people that pay someone else to do work and then complain about the cost after the fact. Especially things like oil changes. Most people cant mount and balance new tires on their own but there are many other things that we can do ourselves, save some major bucks, know it was done properly, and have little pride to go along with a few cold ones.

If you can afford it and not be sorry when the bill comes, go for it. But ALWAYS get a quote first so you wont faint later.

OP, nothing out of line with your bill, given what was done. I rarely pay someone to change my oil, though, because it costs too much and i always wonder if they did it right.

i'm 51 and fell like doing anything but gassing up and driving. Firestone guys sound like tney know what they are doing.and gives me someone to blam if not. paying for work done right doesn't bother me.

Firestone, Merrick Ave. Westbury. :cheers:. My sister took her car to a friends auto place and they were supposed to fix her power steering pump, well we took the auto train to Florida and then drove 3 hours to our house and found a big leak under the car. Power steering pump was leaking and need to be changed down their, that is twice my sister paid for the same part :shrug:. I don't think anyone cares anymore what they do, we had a good mechanic but he needed to move and his prices took a big jump way to much, rip off rates.
