Replace Muffler?; Is It Worth It?

The muffler on my 87 4Runner seems to "muffle" just fine. However, the exhaust pipe (between catalytic conv and muffler) is leaking at a joint. I don't know the age of the muffler. Should I just weld it up and go or replace the muffler whilst I have the opportunity? Also, how do I determine the state of the catalytic converter...or do you just replace them after so many years? My state does not require emissions testing.

I had the same issue I just yanked the cat. (sorry Al Gore) and welded the hole everything has been fine thus far and I seemed to gain a little hp...

Im from Oz and never heard of the Cat Cnoverter before. Do we call them something different or do we just not have them at all?

Im not sure if Oz has Aircare but if u live in BC we do, at least in the lower mainland. Aircare is a series of emission tests a car must pass to be insurable in the lower mainland, a catalytic converter helps regulate how much pollutants are in the exhaust a filter basically, you'll find it just after the exhaust manifolds somewhere behind the oil pan it looks like a tin can...it also eats up some hp due to impeding flow I would imagineimp:

my exhaust goes from the headers to a cherry bomb straight muffler/resonator to a turn down thats it ! but i dont gotta worry about emissions in toledo

Maybe we dont have them then.

But we have heaps more rules and reg's when registering a car. Cant have any rust. Cant have any oil leaks. Its pretty crazy. When you sell a car or want to register a car on the road it has to be completely checked out and pass a 100 point safety test.

You cant just rock up to ICBC with a rusted out, oil leaking, $100 car with balding tires and insure it like you can here in BC (well in some parts)

I have a rotted cat-back too. I contacted a local muffler shop who is going to custom make an exhaust for my truck for $120. I'll probably take out the Cat and drive a pipe through the middle of it while he's got the exhaust out...easier than making a straight pipe and still looks stock!
