Replace Vent Control Servo

I think my vent control servo is gone. Is there a way to replace this without removing the blower motor and the housing it attaches to? The very back screw of three is the one I am having trouble with. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

If you can take a few pictures and post those it may go a long way in helping you out. You can always upload to imgur.com if you need a easy location to do so.

i know what you are talking about, that back screw was a PIA to get out but its do-able. i forget how i got it out but you can definitely take it out.

I might be having the same problem.....what are you symptoms ?

My dual temp control has gone to shit, either all hot or all cold, no blending !

I have two issues, on start up there is a slight rumble for about 20 seconds, that is the upper servo in this picture (just above and left of the red circle). The issue that started this project is that I cant direct the air to the defrost vents. I believe this is the servo that need repaired or replace. It is pointed to by the green arrow. The screw I need to remove is behind where the red circle is. I cant seem to get to it, so any help would be appreciated.

I can't tell 100% from your photo, but I think you're aiming for the wrong servo. Depending on whether or not you have dual zone, there are 3 or 4 servos in the system. I *think* you're pointing to the passenger side "air mix damper servo", which controls the vent air temperature by balancing the mix of heated and cool air. In a dual zone system, there's also an air mix servo in the same position on the driver's side. The air mix servo(s) typically fail first since they get the most usage as the computer constantly adjusts the balance of hot/cool air to maintain cabin temp. The failure mode is a clicking noise as the computer tries to adjust the air balance, but can no longer read the position of the door except at the hot/cold extremes of travel.

Vent selection is controlled by the upper center servo, referred to as the "air outlet damper servo" in the shop manual. This would seem to be your failure point if you can select one or more desired outlets. Grinding sounds like it might be jammed or gummed up.

The last servo controls recirc\fresh air and is labeled "air inlet damper control".

I was going for the wrong servo. It was the one just above the one indicated. Was able to remove it be pulling the two easy to access screws on the metal servo mount. Then I removed the three screws holding the servo to the mount. After removing the servo I checked all of the doors it operates. There was one that had a catch. I moved it through its motions by hand. I checked the servo by connecting everything back up. It operated just fine. I put everything back, works fine now.

hope someone can help me with this too. newbie to forum. I am having same problem, fine hot vs cold, but stuck on vents on dash with AC, won't go to defrost or floor. (04 SR5, does not have dual temp control) Interesting enough, I can get the floor vents to work, but only if I turn the temperature all the way to high (heat). I'm thinking from above it is the air outlet damper servo that is bad? It is making a buzzing sound for about 20 seconds on startup from under dash.
Question also, the pics in the thread above, is that with the dash removed, or are those under the dash with glovebox removed? Is this servo something that can be replaced without removing dash? Thanks
