Replaced JBL Sub/Added Amp: Install Pics/Info

The 4runner's have a 10 speaker JBL system. The amp in the rear compartment is pushing all 10 speakers. After my install, it is still fully functional, except pushing 9 speakers (no sub). The stock sub is 2 ohm DVC at about 45 watts. You can drop in any sub, but it will not perform good with that amount of power. Also, you're sub needs to be under 4" mounting depth, and most 2 ohm DVC subs are more (this type of sub would work best, but won't fit). I doubt that there would be much benefit from just dropping in a sub. It is pretty time consuming getting to the sub. 3/4 of my time was spent getting to the sub and getting the new one mounted up. It took me no time at all to run a few wires for the amp. In doing this, what wires are needed to be pulled from the stock amp to the sub? did you run new pr- outs from the deck to the new amp powering the sub or tap into something going to the original amp.

I'm going to replace the stock HU with Alpine S920HD and add a rear view camera (alpine as well) and the adapter to be able to use my steering wheel control. I'll take pics and maybe post them up here if I am successful with the ad ons. The amp and speaker upgrade will soon follow.

I don't know the dimensions on the amp, never measured that. The amp I'd say would be a 5 channel since is pushes speakers and the sub. The connection is all made in one big wire harness IIRC.

The JBL is not a normal amp. The JBL HU provides data signal 2 the Amp. the AM then puts it to all the different channels speakers including the bass treble fade and left/right. Using it with a non-oem HU is difficult and its only 2 ohm.

Are pins 9 & 19 going into the JBL amp low levels? I've read somewhere that they include data which make them not ideal for tapping into. Right now I'm between tapping into 9 & 19 going into the amp or tapping 32 & 32 going out and adding a line out converter. What do you think will provide a better signal to a mono amp?

Decided to tap into the amp out to sub lines and us a LOC to the new amp. The JL 12W7AE is getting just under 1000w and my god does it ever hit the lows. Will have pics up soon.

Finished install - Distortion

Thanks to Ark and everybody else that contributed to this thread. So me and a friend finished the install on my 4runner last night and it definitely sounds much better, but i'm noticing that there seems to be a lot of distortion even with the input sensitivity turned down way low... (this is all before putting the plastic panel back on.

Any thoughts? I went with the same install that Ark went with except that I had to get a JL JX250 since the old one is no longer in stock. I think it's basically the same though.

We did epoxy the cables inside the enclosure to the the back of the sub to make the cables have hardly any slack (didn't want them rattling around inside). Not sure if that would cause a problem or not...

What settings are people using for their crossover frequency/input sensitivity/bass boost ?

sounds like the input before the amp is too hot.

low pass x over should be around 80, input sensitivity should be set using a dmm , and you shouldn't use bass boost

The stock enclosure (with the inside plastic ribbing removed in the middle). I believe I did the exact same install as Ark did, with the exception that I used a newer JL 250 Watt monoblock amp.

I cut into the speaker wires that originally went to the factory sub, ran them to the amp (the highline wiring harness), and then ran the output from the amp back to the sub enclosure, using the new JL sub. I used the rear seat bolt under the carpet for my ground and the cigarette outlet near the sub to tap into for my power-on wire.

Should i set the frequency filter back all the way up to 200 HZ? I have it set at around 80. I'm guessing that the stock amp already is filtering the signal to the sub, and since i'm using that signal (the speaker wires originally going to the sub) as the input for my new sub amp, i might be getting phase distortion by also using a frequency filter again.

Thoughts?

im confused.. you said you have a 12w7.. isn't the stock sub an 8". You also said its getting 1000watts.. put also said you have a 250watt monoblock.

did you tap into the wires before or after the stock amp.. if after , that's where your distortion problem is(I believe). Seat bolts are never a good ground. are you getting distortion or electrical interference. 200 hz is way to high for a subwoofer, unless your using it as a mid bass sub. which I assume your not. 80-100 hz is the prime area for a low pass xover.
