Replaced JBL Sub/Added Amp: Install Pics/Info

ok forget it, I read your first post on how you did it. That amp is capable of taking the speaker wires and converting them? I'm assuming I'm going to have to get a converter for that- something like this http://www.ecost.com/detail.aspx?ed...le-_-ewbbase-_-Electronics&CAWELAID=386997126

You have two options for getting the signal to the amp. You can do as I did and use speaker level inputs (the amp has to have this capability). You tap into wires leading to the speakers, and there is a plug on the amp that you wire these into. Using this method you don't use RCA's at all. Amps that have this capability come with the harness to do this. The second option is to use a line output converter, which taps into the speaker wires and converts it to RCA's. This is what you linked to. With my amp, there was no need, I just utilized the harness that came with the amp. The speaker level inputs like I used are also called high level inputs. If you scroll down you can see the plug on the amp labeled for this:

The harness plugs in there and has 5 wires on the other end (or 4, depending on the amp, the fifth is just a ground that isn't used). You go by the owners manual and hook up two positives and two negatives, then plug that harness into the amp and you're good to go. Great thread, I've had my JL 8" sub sitting in a box for about 2 years waiting to be installed, but I hadn't gotten the courage to rip it all apart yet, I've been working on replacing door speakers. Great write up, you did exactly what I've been planning for some time :thumbsup:

WOW! :wow2: WHEN YOU SAID IT SOUNDED GOOD- THAT WAS A SEVERE UNDERSTATEMENT. IVE GOT 2 10'S IN MY CORVETTE AND THIS SOUNDS PRETTY CLOSE TO THEM. I ALREADY HAD THE AVIC F90BT NAV HEADUNIT SO INSTALL WAS A SNAP. THE ONLY TROUBLE I HAD WAS ROUTING ALL THE WIRING TO WHERE YOU CAN'T SEE IT. COMPLETELY CHANGED MY RUNNERS ATTITUDE! :dancin:

Great! I know I prefer this over all my other setups (single 12, and two different setups with dual 10's). Great punch, but not overpowering. Glad it worked out for you!

Swamp Rider, a question about pulling apart the plastic lining in the cargo bay - was there a few screws and plastic snaps holding it in place or did you do the ole grab and pull? I did a similar type of install in my civic back in the day and it was a complete nightmare pulling apart the plastic paneling for the Civic's dash.

There were some clips, but they gave way pretty easily with a small tug. The link I provided in the original post is about as detailed as you can get on removing the panels. I can't remember, but I just started at the top and worked my way around, the clips snapped right out.

Can someone confirm, I do not have the 10 speaker system so I'm assuming I don't have that stock sub box hiding under the skin in the back. If I visit a junk yard and find a 'runner with that system, will that box fit in my ride? I've been trying to figure out how to add some nice bass and NOT see it. I've never been a fan of looking at speakers in my cargo bay.
Anyone toy around with those subs that fit under the seat? I can't imagine they would sound good at all.

So I contacted Toyota (Gatorland Toyota in Gainesville, FL) and it's $300 for the OEM plastic panel. Kind of a rip off, but it's pretty much the only way to achieve the OEM look. Just in case anyone wants to ask their particular dealer, tell them you need the plastic panel for the JBL subwoofer that goes in the passenger side cargo area.
Also, assuming the wiring for the stereo for the non-JBL systems is similar, how hard/easy is this for a novice at stereo installs?

ARK, do you have any wider angle shots of your cargo area, it seems like the only difference is a single panel. In the JBL equipped vehicles, there's the panel with the plastic grate for the sub, in the non JBL equipped vehicles, it's a storage bin.
What I'm thinking is this - Bend over and buy the panel from Toyota, buy a speaker/amp combo same or similar to what you used, and build a custom box to mount behind the plastic panel. Then MacIver some way to mount it.

If I were going to spend $300 on a panel, plus another $200-$300 on the sub/amp/wiring, I'd go with the JL stealthbox. You still don't loose much cargo space but you get a better 10" sub. Another option is to use J.A's cargo box idea and seal off a chamber to house a 10" (or 12") sub. You should have enough room for the sub and also a little storage for cargo if done right. Here are some pics (only one is mine) showing the panels and the cargo box. A full writeup on how to build the cargo box is on J.A.'s site.

You can find the whole amp/sub setup on ebay for like $50-100, then all you need is the trim panel
