yeah I would say 90% or greater now gone, the bass is much deeper than before, sounds like I have did a 3rd upgrade. the difference between dynomatting and before is almost as great as the difference between the aftermarket set up and stock.
But you will need to get the 12 square foot 'door kit'. Its going to take a good bit of it. I paid $70 at Best Buy, I wanted it 'that day'. I'm sure it can be found cheaper online if you shop around.



** Swamp Rider - It's my first experience using dynomat and it was extremely easy to work with and apply. It conforms very easily and sticks everywhere very good. I would highly recommend it to anyone doing the amp and sub upgrade. Even if your changing to another set up I think it would complement anything your going to have.

Thanks for the info. I'm the type of person that I'm never content for long, always looking for something better. Once I swap out my head unit, I'm gonna try to leave the audio alone and work on other stuff, but we'll see how that goes. I am gonna have to take the panels off to remove some wiring, and I'm almost certain I'll be dynamatting the area like you did. You can get that dynamat kit on amazon for $50, that's a cheap price to pay for the added sound if it does indeed help that much. I don't have many rattles, but still think it would help. If I end up doing this I'll post up my thoughts (I'm sure I will, just not sure when).

$cheap way to upgrade sub

I spent $100 on this sub from bestbuy.com and just hooked it up with the stock amp...just had to make a spacer and cut the plastic in the back a little to fit the new sub......it was definately worth it..... here are some pics...

its sounds better..... ive had a lot of systems in different cars....the stock amp isnt quite powerfull enough to really get the sub going but it deffinately sounds better (not just me but other 4th gen 4runner oweners told me the same thing) I do hear more rattle now, i think that dyno mat might be a good idea..

What sub is that? I never could match one up to the factory specs, so I chose to do the amp as well. I've really wondered about this though, good to hear it worked out for you.

I used a Kicker - CompVR Series 8" Dual-Voice-Coil 2-Ohm Subwoofer

Hey ARK,
I just ordered my JL 8v1-2 subwoofer today. I was insprired by your posts and i decided to pull the trigger. I cant wait to see how it sounds. I have been running a pioneer 12 inch woofer that blew recently and just got tired of not having the cargo space. I am going to be doing a gut job of the jbl deck and adding some screens so there will be more to come soon!

Keep us updated! Hopefully you can give us a good comparison to the 12" sub that you had. I went from a stock system to this and it was a great improvement. I know I like it much better than my setups I had in my previous rigs.

So Ark Swamp Rider, i have a question for you, how much bass is this little JL putting out? Is it enough to get your mirrors shaking a bit, haha. So you have the factory stereo, so i'm guessing that you plugged into the stock wires from the stereo to the factory amp to get your sub inputs?

Actually you can see the mirror affected by the JL if tuned properly. No its not alot, but i guarantee you will be impressed.

I've not seen this done on by anyone who didn't have factory JBL. I'll try to get a vid of mine, I can get the rear view mirror shaking pretty good. I tapped the wires that go to the sub. I already had access there and it did the job. My amp has speaker level inputs, so I was able to use those.

My main thing would be acquiring the plastic trim .. I think I could make everything else work if I could some how get a hold of the factory pieces...

Yea, I believe that's going to be the main issue if you try this on a non-JBL equipped 4runner. The cargo panel is different to accommodate the sub, you'd have to have that along with the OEM sub enclosure.

Guess I might try scoutin around some of the junk yards... what would I need to make this transition? Besides the plastic panel, and the sub enclosure? Anything else? What models will fit, 06 to 08 or 09 ??? I have an 06 btw..

I'm almost positive you'll need the box and panel, not sure what else. I'm not sure if the interior panels changed, I think they are the same for all 4th gen's though. Maybe someone else can confirm that.

If you don't have the JBL system, a Stealthbox is nice or better yet build a knockoff stealthbox like mine...you lose a little bit of cargo space, not much and is probably cheaper than the junkyards!

That does look good but Id like to try and make it look as factory as possible, and the bigger reason is if my wife cant see it, she cant complain about it LOL...
