replacement headlight bulbs

One of my bulbs is out on my 01 4Runner. Figured I'd replace them both at the same time. What's the best bulbs to get?

If you want a brighter bulb, but not a change in wattage, the Vision X bulbs is a good choice.

I just need something to replace one that is out, so I'll do both. Don't really care if it's brighter, but I want something decent I guess...
Prefer to order from Amazon so I don't have to go out to get it...

I used to have silverstar ultras and one burned out in ~9 months. I replaced them with PIAA xtreme white, and they're way brighter.

Buy any name brand bulb and it will be fine. No need to get too cranial over the subject matter.

The stockers are probably what's in it now just to give you an indicator that bulbs aren't something that go bad quickly.

I disconnected my DRLs and installed Silver Star Ultras right after..... that was 3 years ago and no failures!!

I had similar bad luck with Silver Star Ultras, and then went with these NightTechs from PIAA on a recommendation on this forum. Also much brighter, and apparently a whiter (less blue) color temp.

They've been in since September, 2014--over twice as long as the SSU's and still going strong. One review says they are better at throwing light long distance than the PIAA Extreme Whites, which is what they are supposed to do. Needed for the twisty back country roads I drive.

now some of you have newer models with clear lenses, for those of us with the older diffused glass, do you think a particular bulb would lend itself better to these?

If you first buy and install one of these:
HL282S Upgrade Headlamp Harness for Switched Ground Vehicles | Rally Lights
Then you can run any wattage headlight bulb you want.
I've put this harness into my last three trucks, including my current 4Runner.

I have the old style headlights. The PIAAs work great in them. I'm sure they would be even better in a clear housing however.

It's hard to take pictures at night of anything with an iPhone, and pics of headlights are even harder. But here's a pic that kinda shows the difference.

In person the difference is much more pronounced.

just bulbs or did do the aftermarket wiring harness also? which bulbs are the way to go? thanks!

So I bought new bulbs, but how do I get the old ones out? I can pull the adapter off, but the bulb itself won't come out. Do I just have to pull harder? I don't want to break anything...
