Replacement Muffler

I need to replace my muffler and have cruised the forums looking for the best alternative to OEM.

My vehicle is a 1999 Toyota 4Runner Limited with a TRD Supercharger.
I want something that is quite and is going to last....as long as possible. I will also do the work myself instead of taking it to my local muffler shop.

Someone had mentioned Bosal and when I was searching on the forum people have indicated to stay away from Bosal and get Walker...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It depends if you want a direct fit, or something you'll need to weld/clamp together. I had a Magnaflow for a couple years, and just got rid of it. It sounded good at first, but I just got annoying. Nothing like driving through a camp ground with loud exhaust. I just put in a Walker Quiet Flow SS direct fight, and it's very quiet again.

I would like a direct fit if possible and having a quiet muffler is my concern. I am willing to pay a little extra to get something that will last as well. My local automotive garage quoted me over $500.00 for a direct fit from the catalytic back on a Bosal system. Seems high after seeing that I can get the same unit for around $250.00.

Are you needing a full cat-back, or just the muffler section? I picked up my Walker direct fit from JC Whitney for around $120 a couple weeks ago. If you want to go this route I have a 20% off code, and free shipping with no minimum that I can give you. If you go this route make sure you get 2 new isolators, and 2 new gaskets.

Another option would be to get a Gibson cat-back from [MENTION=9]Jason B[/MENTION]. This is comparable to the TRD cat-back's, and has a deeper tone to it.

The factory muffler is pretty quiet!

For around the same price I got a borla cat back. Not terribly quiet, but not ridiculous. Sounds much quieter after driving around with a bad muffler for a few months!

This is what I got and I'm quite happy with it:

4Runner 1996-2002 Cat-Back Exhaust part # 14659

The tail pipe on that is rerouted to go straight out the back. I think that's cleaner, but may not be compatible with all aftermarket bumpers.

Get an autoparts international system. Lifetime warranty and I think the muffler is even larger than the OEM. Avoid the JBA exhaust like hell if you want quiet.

I went with the Borla too, but not the cat back system, that I let my exhaust shop do with the side exit. One reason it was cheaper,
however another one of my reasons was that years and years back, station wagons ( before rigs like ours, shows my age) had safety issues with exhaust that comes out the back if it had a window that went down, and exhaust being sucked in
another reason, is I do drive with the back window down a bit when the sunroof is open, and I thought that it might be louder if the exhaust was in the back

maybe the aero dynamics are better these days and that does not happen

I feel like I could gain ground clearance alone by replacing that with a smaller one.... I'm surprised I haven't bashed in the leading edge of that thing in the woods yet...

The Walker is as quiet as OEM. The other thing is that it hangs better too. My doesn't sit below my frame rails like the OEM did.

Its definitely noticeably louder with the back window open.
I am familiar with these "station wagons" you mention. In fact, a Buick roadmaster wagon was on my short list when I bought the 4runner (couldn't bring myself to buy one with 250k kms, but didn't have the same problem with buying a 4runner with 300!)

If you sit in traffic a lot with the back window open I suppose it might be an issue but there's no traffic around here so it's not a big deal for me.

I got mine from an independent auto store. About 170 OTD with gaskets included for free. I could get you info on the place to see if they will ship.

My 97 limited is supercharged and I have the TRD cat back with a flowmaster muffler. I still have the TRD resonator aft of the muffler and I always get compliments on the sound.
