Replacement Windshield Glass

Hi,
I was just driving on the highway, keeping my distance and then all of a sudden this car cut me off. Moments later, a loud sound came from the front and then I see this 1 inch crack on my windshield!! I am so angry right now.
However, I have been doing some searching on the fourm and have some questions.

1) Is the insurance replacement glass just as good as the $375 Toyota Glass that I was quoted form the dealership? Is it possible to get the 2006 "thicker" glass and covered under insurance? (BTW, i have AAA insurance)

2) I am probably pushing for a windshield replacement, not a fix. Is that a good idea for this 1 inch crack with a dent in it?

3) Does anyone had any problems with their windshield replacement? Leaks and more wind noise?

I checked into this at one point. In my situation I will have to pay any difference in price between the standard replacement v. any other replacement I want.

Also note: toyota glass has a rain repelling feature which the aftermarket replacement probably won't.

2 window replacement stories:

1)4runner rear window....got safelite replacement for about 1/2 the price of what the dealer quoted. It has been in the truck for about a year with no problems or complants.

2)VW Scirocco, front windshield ...got non dealer replacement (can't remember company) and kept the car another 2-3 years with no problems or complaints.

Aside from jacal's rain repelling feature, I don't see the need to use OEM.

I had a local glass company replace my windshield on my Maxima. I traded it after about a year and never had a problem. I wouldnt think twice about an "aftermarket" windshield. They all have to pass the same safety requirements. Another added bonus is that you can get them to come to your house or work and have them do it right then and there...its very easy. Plus I get unlimited window replacement through my comprehensive insurance.

I am going through the same thing right now. A tree took on my windshield on Sunday and am in the process of getting Toyota glass for the fact that I dont want to lose the rain repellant. I heard through hear about the aftermarket not having the rain repelling feature and have been convinced of using the OE. I will agree though I have had aftermarket windshields without a problem but in theis case I want OE...

Sorry to hear that the 4Runner got into a tangle with the tree. For replacing the windshield, I wouldn't think the rain repellent should be a major factor in the decision -- in my opinion, it doesn't work any better than Rain-X.

See if your insuarance company has a glass replacement built into it. I'm with State Farm and the replaced my windshield with Toyota OEM glass with no cost to me. $0.00

I used Safelite and they called my insuarance to verify it was ok, and they were given the go ahead. It would have cost me about $500 including install if I paid for it on my own. It's been about 1.5 years and no issues.

My insurance company said it was fine for me to want OE I just have to give them the total cost and they'll cover it. The crappy thing was I noticed a dime size ding in my windshield and was driving around town and a tree finished the job off taking out the windshield....I was pissed

Well,
The insurance company decided to attempt to repair the "crack". However, if it doesn't work, they will charget a $1,000 detuctable to get a replacement glass. It is a ripoff.
So, I think if I have to go that route, I will go to toyota and replace the glass...

Should be repairable since it looks like a chip. Safelite says cracks less than a dollar bill in length can be repaired. Usually they drill holes at the ends of the crack to relieve pressure and fill them with clear glass epoxy. The repairs should be free to you and covered by your insurance company, since it's cost much less than full glass replacement.

A buddy of mine, had a chip drilled out and filled with epoxy. You can't tell it's there unless its pointed out. You can barely feel that it's there.

Windshield Replqcement

I need to replace the windshield in my 1999 toyota 4runner but as a newbie to this forum, I am confused. Are only front windshields from 1996 thru 2002 compatible with my 4runner? Please help. I got a fix it ticked and need to replace it ASAP. Thanks.....
