Replacing door lock cylinder (2004)

Somebody decided it would be a good idea to try to break into our 4runner. Luckily they did not succeed, but they did damage (ruin?) the door lock cylinder in the process. Currently the lock still works - it can be operated using the switch inside the car or with the remote. However, the door cannot be unlocked with the key.

The local dealership quoted us $275 to replace it. Naturally, I'm inclined to do it myself, but I'm having difficulty locating the part(s), at least online.

Does anyone have experience with this? Suggestions on where to get the part, how hard it is to replace, etc.? The cylinder is pushed in ~1" further than it should be. I'm hoping it's not ruined and just needs to be removed and reinstalled correctly, but I'm not sure. Any help is appreciated.

(Also, is it just me, or is it a poor design choice to only have ONE door on the car that can be unlocked. If we did not have the remote, we wouldn't be able to get into the car!)

I had to replace the door lock actuator on my mom's Avalon. The dealer want a ton of money to fix it and i got the part from a Toyota dealer in TX that sells parts wholesale and there is a Toyota mechanic that hangs out on that site who sent me the pdf file of how to get the door apart to replace it.

If you go to the 4runner forum and post the question, I bet he will respond because he's pretty good about that. I can get you his name on the forum if necessary.

To remove the cylinder look in the end of the door for a rubber plug that is in line with the cylinder. Remove the rubber plug and loosen the set screw you will find behind it. I just put my key into the lock and partially turned it and pulled and the cylinder came out. There is a plastic shaft on the rear of the cylinder that plugs in to the door lock actuator. If you can't insert your key you may have to grasp it with needle nose pliers.

Thank you very much! I got it out and was able to determine that the cylinder was broken (literally part of it was missing). I got a new one ordered for $68, plus the $40-50 it will cost to get it matched to my key. Thanks again!
