Replacing doors with doors from other years

Hi there,

I picked up a 1995 4Runner with a blown 22RE (headgasket) a few months ago. In that time span, a friend and I rebuilt the top end, cut out rusty quarter panels and welded new ones on, source/replaced fenders, etc., etc. Definitely spent our fair share of time at the local pick n pulls around town. There's still a lot more to be done lol It runs like a champ, but still needs a lot more work.

I'm not a mechanic (far from it) but took on the project with a friend to get some wrench-IQ.

I'm at the point where I'm going to replace the current doors (through-rust) with replacement doors (virtually no rust). The current doors as well as the replacement doors have power windows, however, I was told that the replacement doors (rear passenger and rear driver) come from a 1991 4Runner as well as a 1993 4Runner.

When picking the doors up at a parts store, one of the employees said that we can't just bolt the doors up and plug in the relays. He said that something (didn't say what) was different and that the replacement doors wouldn't work if we were to just plug them up.

Does anybody know what the differences are between a door from a 1991 and 1993 4Runner is compared to one from a 1995 4Runner? i.e. what can I pull from the existing doors and install in the replacement doors to make the replacement doors work? I'm hoping I don't have to entirely gut the replacement doors and transfer everything from the existing doors to the replacement doors. Ideally, I'm hoping I can replace a few wires and possible the motor.

For some reason, I suspect that one of the doors might have actually come from a Toyota Hilux (1991-1995), but am not sure. It's in too good condition to not have come from Japan, I think.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I'm a little gun shy just to start pulling doors apart because, well, I don't know how to do it without breaking/snapping plastic bits.

p.s. does anybody know how to adjust the throttle stop on the engine? The 4Runner runs fine, but when I take my foot off the gas, the thing stalls out. I looked at the throttle cable and there's literally 0 tension in the throttle cable. Only when the thing is up to optimal temperature will it run on its own volition.

As far as the doors are concerned, they will bolt right up. Any door 90-95 is compatible. Personally I'm trying to get my hands on doors with manual locks and windows. That way I don't have to worry about the power options.

The doors were changed internally in 94 when a beam was added to increase side impact protection.
Also, doors from a 2-door 4runner aren't interchangeable with 4-door front doors.
Electrics are same AFAIK.

Yes, I believe so. But they wont have the second door handle on the inside, passenger door. 84-89 4runner and 84-88 4x4 pick-up are the same, besides the handle.

Umm, yeah.

USE911 was pointing out the fact that truck doors are the same except they don't have the second handle on the pass side.

As a side note, the basic door shell is the same, the truck doors are set up to accept the second handle, wing vents, etc. When you are talking 1st gen Runners/2nd gen trucks they are the same 2wd/4wd, truck/4Runner.

Oh, truck. I missed that part, I though he meant it would be different because of the year. Yeah, the truck door won't have a handle for the rear passenger.

I know that 2nd gen 4runner doors are shorter than that era pickup doors and will not work.

This is only hearsay to me, but I was told that pick up doors (89-95, non tacoma) will work on a 2nd gen 2 door 4runner.

Thanks, I thought so too. I just wanted to make sure before I ran a couple hours south. These are 86 truck doors, rust free and have brown interior panels which I need. My previous owner built this 85 runner out of two and swapped in the SR5 package except the door panels. Ill just cut in the rear passenger door handle and fabricate some summer doors from the originals.
I plan to put up some pictures this spring before the sprucing up project begins.

So here's my issue. The replacement door that I bought, the wire harness on one of the replacement doors is a little different. The replacement door in question is from a 93 and 91 4Runner -possibly Hilux.

The harness pin-pattern is different on the replacement door compared to the original door -the number of wires on the replacement door are the same as the original door and all the wires on the replacement door even have the same sheath. So, the 6 wires that are attached to the harness on the replacement door are the same in number and sheath pattern as the original door. Because of the different wire pattern, I can't plug it into the female end.

My issue is that I cut the wires off the original door so I could take the door off to give myself more room to reach the harness -I suck, I know. At first, I tried to take all the wires out of the original door harness and swap the harnesses. But, one the male end of the original wire harness is oxidized pretty badly so I figure to buy a replacement. Just keep it simple. Not exactly cost-effective, but it's cleaner.

Here's my question: Does anybody know where I can buy this system of wires? This is a pic of the replacement door. The wires that I'm pointing to is what I want to replace since the pin-pattern is different than my 95 4Runner.

Also, I'm trying to take the rear tailgate window completely out so I can sandblast the tailgate, however, does anybody know how to take the window out of the weatherstrip right? i.e. the rusted piece.

All the windows in the doors had a screw that held the window in place. The tailgate window seems to be way different.

Door harness? Good luck at the dealership though, I doubt that can get that. I think your best bet is going to be somebody like FoG that has the part or calling around your local wrecking yards.

FOG - Sorry, I've been dragging ass on those pics to you. I keep forgetting to take them. Pulled the driver's side fender off last night and noticed that the thing the fender bolts on to (dunno the name of it) has surface rust all over it. Now, I have to sandblast it, cover in rust converter (just in case), rust preventer, and rock guard.

Just picked up a rust-free, driver-side fender. Boom.
