Replacing head unit

Do I understand correctly that you have to remove the instrument cluster cladding before you can remove the center cladding around the head unit? I looked at the pics from some of the threads and I wasn't completely clear. I'll be replacing the stock radio and speakers soon. Any suggestions/helpful hints are welcome.
