Replacing One Rim

Through a rather freak accident, my wife's 4runner now has to replace one rim.

They weren't stock rims (MKW M80s) from the previous owner, and apparently they don't make them any more. They came with a negative offset (-10), and all I can find available are +10.

If I put a +10 on one and the other three are -10, will it make a big difference? Could spacing out the -10s equalize it?

I'd rather not bite another $600 check to replace all the wheels in addition to all the other stuff.

Riding on 265/65/17s right now.

I wouldn't recommend mixing offsets when permanently replacing wheels. Keep looking there has to be something out there. If not, you may have to bite the bullet and replace them all.

You can get some factory rims for $400 from eBay (17" Toyota 4Runner Wheels Rims Set of 4 Factory Dealer Takeoffs | eBay). Your tires a bit small - OEM is 265-70-17. You are more than 3% off (). So I would just a spend a few more bucks then get the following from eBay (2016 Toyota 4Runner Factory 17" Wheels Rims 265 70 17 Tires Tacoma FJ Trail | eBay) and transfer the TPMS sensors from your old wheelset to the new one.

There may be some unsold stock somewhere. A place that specializes in rims might be able to search for you - or even an auto salvage yard might be able to find one. Lots of those yards are all networked now. All you need is the part number and model number of your rims.

I used to work for a Tire shop in Illinois. We could source wheels but it was very costly and was usually better off just getting a full set of new Wheels at the cost.

That's what I was afraid of. Going to have to do some searching of the forums to see if there are any good recos of wheels/rims. Thanks!

Thanks, realized I typed incorrectly. They're 265/70/17s

Need to find good looking wheels that won't break the bank now. Don't want new tires since the M/S2s are on there currently and are amazing. Just need to new rims.

Any recos on good hubcentric rims that won't break the bank? Any issues fitting a 265 on an 8 or 8.5"? Currently they're on 17x9s.

Curious how a wheel got destroyed, but not the tire?

Is the wheel beyond repair? There are wheel straightening services you know?

There are always OEM takeoffs in the FS section.

Well, long story short. The wheel came off. Tnterior of the rim is scratched to hell, and the mating surface is pretty screwed up.

Was at the dealer for oil/rotation a month before. Tires weren't touched between then. Driven ~300mi between then and the incident. Felt some oddity in the handling on a trip, but it was a quick jaunt to the store and 5mi from home. Initially I thought it was the u-joint while driving, until the wheel started rolling down the street ahead of us and it was pretty clear where the problem was.

Don't know if that tire is fully okay yet, but tires were purchased around 6 mos ago, so I'd rather replace one (or two) than all four.

With that story, I'd start at the dealer and find out what THEY are going to do for you... unless they told you to come back within 25 miles to retorque the lug nuts (costco does this to avoid your situation).

They said more or less: it's been a month, can't prove there was no user error or involvement in the problem.

I am assuming that you have a record of the work the dealership did.

they are liable for that wheel to come off and if someone got killed or damage to another vehicle they will be held responsible since there are records/documents revealing the work they did.

you will still have a problem finding a matched wheel though. wheel shops that recondition wheels may locate a replacement ..

Any suggestion on the route to head? As in the service department wasn't helpful.

With how little damage there was, and insurance covering it (minus deductible), I was happy to just get back on the road. I didn't think it was worth chasing the dealer and potential headaches for a $500 deductible on $2500 in repairs. Hell, had I know how cheap it had been I don't even know if I would have made a claim.

I think I may just order the TRD wheels. Some guy on ebay has them for ~600 after shipping. The listing says they're 17x8 so they should still fit my 265s.

I would tell the service manager your going to post on facebook how they damaged your vehicle and how they refused to address their failed work.

If that don't work I know some that had an attorney call the dealership .
the insurance company was told that the dealership did the faulty work ?

if not this will effect your future insurance costs.

I wouldn't even let the service manager know. I'd just do it. Sometimes grabbing their attention that way publicly will put them in a position where they're willing to help out a bit more.

If not, it won't be because you didn't try.

Thanks for the reply!

Wife spent the last week or so back/forth with the service manager and GM.
First they say they want to see what they can do to help.
Second they say(our) insurance covered it, so they don't have.
Third they say let us know what wasn't covered by insurance, in case they can help.
Then finally today they say, again, "it was months after you brought it in, so its not our problem."

A bit annoyed for all the runaround. If they had simply offered to help find a new rim, inspect the repairs to make sure its up to spec, and ensured the tire got mounted/balanced properly we would have been fine.

Now it seems like either the unprofessional route (facebook/social media), or the professional and expensive (lawyer) route. If the latter, then including diminished value means it would likely exceed small claims ($3k maximum in Ohio/Kentucky). Not sure what's prudent.

Lesson learned to check the lug nuts frequently and to avoid the local Toyota dealer next month when I go looking for a Taco/Tundra.

the dealership should be reported to all , that this is not the place to do business.

we all make mistakes its all about how we react to our mistakes.
they failed , so they must pay the price .
