I am at 123,000 miles on my 03' v8 and I have not changed the T-Belt yet. I guess I better do it soon!
Replacing timing belt because of AGE at 52,000 miles???

So i have a 2006 4runner with 44k miles, took it into the dealer for 45k service, they said that my water pump is leaking so i should change it, along with the drive belt. I have a couple of concerns....does leaking mean its going to fail soon and if it does fail...what the worst that could happen. I havent seen anything leaking under the truck....and my wife is being stubborn about doing anything. What do you guys think? Also, i figure i might as well change my drive and timing belts, since they will be in there anyway...but it seems too soon what do you think about that? By the way quoted by a dealer of 780 for all the work, seems like a good price. Oh sorry this is so long..but i probably will only be keeping the truck for another 2-3 years at the most. Advice? words of wisdom?

There's leaking and there's Leaking.
All of them weep a tiny bit, enough to leave a visible sign in the little drain hole. Ever had to add coolant ? Ever see any drip in the driveway ?
This is the dealer money maker water pump drain hole stain.

I just changed mine at 131,000 miles and it looked like it could easily have gone another 30,000. I just bought all the parts online which was around 220.00 and it came with everything. Even the auto-tensioner
There are a couple of dealerships and national chains I've been to over the years...that have tried more then once to tell me a part was faulty when it actually wasn't. Some of these places the mechanics work on commission. So the mechanic could actually double their income by getting you to replace parts that were perfectly fine.
If you ever suspect that the mechanic/dealer is selling you a line of bull then get a second opinion. The water pump may be faulty...but it may also be working perfectly and not leaking.

Well, this weekend past I just finished changing my timing belt and water pump due to age, not mileage (~70000 miles). I am the 2nd owner and I know it was used for towing previously so I thought better safe than sorry. Also, by doing it myself I saved $800 min over what dealers and other local shops wanted (bought the parts online too - saved big there also)
This isn't the hardest job I've done, and not especially challenging except in the amount of time required and the need for a larger impact gun to get that crank drive pulley bolt to come off.
Looking at my water pump there are traces of dried coolant in the weep hole. Does that mean it was going to give up? Probably not real soon but again - given the amount of time it took me to get in there and the relative cost of the parts, I chose to replace it.
Bayrunner - your 4Runner is a V6? Don't they have a timing chain, not a belt?

A chain will start to make noise to let you know it needs to be changed. And that should be no sooner then 250k miles (if you maintain the engine properly). 6years/90k is ONLY for timing belts...NOT chains. Many chains will last 300-400k miles before they even start to make any noise.
what part of the country are you at Champ? Sounds like a great price...

If anyone thinks their excuse of why water pump leaks are temporary and not to worry about it is ridiculous please feel free to laugh like I did.
On a slightly more serious note, I wash my 4Runner at least twice a month, wash out the engine bay and make it nice looking every month, and regularly top off the fluids. So going by Toyota's description my water pump will never be leaking where it needs to be replaced... Who the hell hires these engineers!?

Yes, FWIW, I just replaced my timing belt with 70,000 miles on it because my truck died in the middle of nowhere, and from the CEL codes, I was fearing it was the belt. The belt and timing were perfect. I guess what'd I'm trying to say is that at 70k, I expected to see a worn out belt. Far from it. You wouldn't have been able to tell the new belt from the old! So it could have easily gone another 20-30K safely.

The timing belt on my 2008 4Runner was replaced in December, 2011 at 168,000 km (~104,000 miles). Now she has almost 335,000 km and 9 years old timing belt (~208,000 miles). I have AISIN timing belt and water pump kit I bought couple years ago for this job but did not have time to do it myself yet. Hopefully I will have some time to change it this year.
When I had the belt on my ‘02 replaced in 2010 it looked brand new at 122k.....but better safe than sorry. I am having mine replaced this week on my ‘07 @ 172k (it’s 2nd belt in 14 years). I am curious to see what it looks like. She’s been in the shop for 3 days waiting on a coolant flex pipe on back order. Supposed to arrive tomorrow.
