replacing Xreas...

i've done a search, but could not get a real answer to the question, here it is:

i'm most likely going to replace the xreas with a regular shock/suspension setup. I want to replicate or improve the ride quality i had with Xreas, that is softness and handling on the road. I do very little offroading, so lifts/offroad capability don't mean much to me. I use the truck for mostly hwy driving,
thanks in advance

The 3 most popular options are FJ cruiser springs with bilstien 5100s, Old Man Emu (OME not OEM) and some sort of coilovers. Since lifting isn't a priority I think the FJ springs with bilstien 5100 will give you a great ride and be very cost effective. Below are some links that should help.

search bar, so many threads on this already, that's why I'm your only reply

Or the people who are willing to provide feedback haven't read his thread yet. As stated he did a search and couldn't find his answer so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

So ride quality is quite subjective so you'll get varying opinions regarding what's "soft" and if suspension XYZ will mimic XREAS. In my opinion, XREAS is not soft and quite abrupt on uneven surfaces or bumps. It handles well on flat surfaces and keeps you fairly level.

Not sure what your budget is but I think that a full FJ suspension or Bilsteins are the suspensions that most go to when replacing stock components and not needing a huge performance upgrade. Both are fairly inexpensive compared to a coilover system which would be overkill for you. I haven't ridden in either setup so hopefully someone can chime in or at the very least narrow your search criteria.

Good Luck!!

Unless you are wanting a more advanced setup for off road ride, which it sounds like you don't, it will be very hard to duplicate the xreas on road performance. Xreas was designed to dramatically improve on road handling and stability, which it does very well by using counter active fluid channels to literally force the wheels to stayon the road. Unless you are going to build an after market variation, you won't be able to duplicate the ride control that fluid linked whole vehicle suspensions give you. If your xreas is not leaking and you are not looking to go increase offroad ability then I say keep xreas. I love how aggressive it allows me to drive around corners. I had a 90 4runner, and I had to drive so much slower in corners.

Fj swap for suure, and given the situation id go for a set of oem fj shocks as well. Therees a good deal on a seet in the classifieds on toyota120.com.

Xreas

5100's will be stiffer than the XREAS. I made the swap to 5100s about 6mos ago and there are still times that I wish hadn't. Check with the dealer and local shops to see what they recommend to keep or better you current ride.

thanks for the replies guys,
unfortunately, there is a leak (at least) in the controller module/piping on the drivers side underneath the vehicle. So it has to be replaced at the dealer for xreas or changed out for something

If it is in the line by the controller and not a shock why not check with the dealer and see what it would cost to repair. I love my XREAS and will be bummed when it goes, but if shocks start leaking, I will not pay the big $$$ to replace with new XREAS, but will likely go with stock FJ swap or FJ and Bilsteins. . . . .don't really want to go stiffer though.

i've read on a few forums that once there is a leak in the system, the fluid cannot not be simply replaced but they whole system changed up for new. I'm going to a local toyota dealer early this week. will update

Front right and rear left are connected, and front left/rear right are connected. It is possible to replace only one half of the system, don't let people tell you the entire system has to be replaced if you only have one leaking part (or if all leaking parts are part of the same 'half').

Listen, I did the Bilstein 5100 swap per all the hype I've read about 'em in these and other forums, and to be honest was completely miserable after. All four of my XREAS were leaking after I drove several thousand miles doing heavy towing and always loaded the truck heavy for years. I should have installed airbags long ago but never did, so probably could've avoided ruining the system in the first place, but that's history.

I wanted a) more clearance for the off roading I do, b) a cheaper solution than replacing the entire XREAS system. Decided on 5100's in the front with .85" lift, and left the rear alone opting to later install FJ springs or spacers in the back.

BUT once installing the Bilsteins all around and scrapping XREAS, I IMMEDIATELY noticed the following:

- Body roll without XREAS (especially on freeway onramps, mountain roads, and driveway entrances), is VERY noticeable, particularly if you've driven with XREAS for years and have become accustomed to it.
- Nose dives on braking and nose hike?(or whatever you call it) on acceleration was now VERY notieceable and uncomfortable.
- Much more stiffness and jittery feeling on nearly every type of road except an ultra smooth highway.

I lasted ~5,000 miles on that setup and just couldn't deal with it. I finally just pulled the trigger and swapped everything back to XREAS. All new parts all round less the mounting brackets for the center units and clips for the lines. I also added Air Lift 1000 bags to the rear, and the Daystar 2.5/1.5 kit to get the lift I wanted.

I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER! MY SMOOTH RIDE AND GREAT HANDLING ARE BACK!!!! All of the problems above have gone away.

Costs:
- The Bilstein 5100 setup ran me ~$500. Going back to XREAS (completely replacing all parts) cost me ~$1300
(Adding Daystar = ~$150, Adding Airlift = ~$150)

Granted, I did all the labor myself. Took me 1.5 - 2 days, could probably be done faster but I did it all in my driveway, took my time and did a bunch of other stuff while under there (diff. fluids, transfer case, transmission, etc).

So think about it: you could be looking at at around $800 more to get the XREAS ride quality back. BUT, if you go with the Bilsteins Plus FJ Springs (which I did not), then you're probably only at only $600 or so more for new XREAS. THEN, if you only have to replace HALF of your XREAS system, you're now right at around the same price for either except you get the full benefits of XREAS back.

The install is not all that difficult, it just needs to be done right, and if you're like me you'll be 10x happier with the truck back the way you liked it rather than spending all that time and $$ to get some aftermarket solution that frankly rides like crap.

No offense, but in my opinion, half the people who comment on XREAS either don't have the system or have never driven a T4R with it, so they simply don't know what they're talking about on XREAS. The ones that do have it and scrapped it for anything else and say the ride is "better" w/o XREAS, I honestly just don't see any way how that's possible unless they either drive like Grandma or only drive on silky smooth straight highways with no potholes, bumps, or turns.

Bottom line: be sure to really do the math before listening to all the others that keep telling everybody to simply "Scrap XREAS!!!!" "Go with Bilsteins, they're soooooo much better" blah blah blah. For me, all that was utter nonsense. I should have just replaced XREAS in the beginning and saved myself the hassle, time, $$, and frustration. At least I'm happier and wiser now :thumb3:

I want to say, right on.

It comes down to what you want. The Blisten set up is great for offroad and is a nice set up if you never had XREAS. As I said early on in the thread, if we are talking simply about on road control, ride and stability, you will not be able to beat XREAS.

And yes, I suspect many on here have not driven with the XREAS for any length, as if they had, there is simply no way they wouldn't agree that is gives superior on road experience.

I have literally driven ton's of SUV/Truck high ride vehicles and I can honestly say that the XREAS system gives the best ride I have ever experienced on a 4x4 SUV. It allows one to drive the vehicle much more aggressively and provides a much better on road experience.

Just to clarify. We are not talking a off road rig build up. I am in complete agreement that for a serious off road rig, XREAS needs to be ditched for practical purposes. But, as the thread talks about the best on road performance, I agree with the above post.

As for costs... before you worry about new install costs; see what you can find at junk yards. I have always had pretty good luck. See if you cant find a truck that was flooded or something else at a pick and pull and see if you cant replace the parts. You may need to pay a dealership to do the actual install, but it would save you some money.

Anyway. My person opinion follows the above post. You will lose, not gain on road performance in switching away from XREAS. Since most runners out there do not have it, you have many people who have never driven with it and honestly don't know what they are missing.

Do you need it? No. I drove for years without it, but now that I have had it; I would want to keep it if I could....

Since you have it, losing it is going to be a bit of a disappointment. You will notice you will have to drive very differently without it and have to take it far easier around corners.

I had the xreas and drove on it for over a year. I was never impressed. It did stay flat in turns but I felt it didn't soak up bumps at all. I did just the fj coil swap and it was night and day difference. The ride was smoother, bumps were felt less, and I would never go back to stock coils. I then rode with a friend who has one with the fj swap and 5100s. It rode better than mine, and not long after I made the swap myself. I'm still very pleased with the outcome and don't miss xreas at all. Small bumps in the road such as expansion joints aren't even felt anymore and they were very noticeable with the stock system.

The problem with ride quality is that it is very subjective. I like my setup because there is less nose dive and its smoother over bumps. 95% of my driving is on road, and the roads in my area aren't the best. There is a little more body roll, but its not a lot different. I still have no problems with it.

No one is right or wrong, its all personal preference. I like my setup with a lifetime warranty. I've seen xrreas systems go out with fewer than 60k miles, so there's no way I personally would pay that much for a system that may not last.

Ok, I understand where you're coming from but unfortunately, I don't drive like a grandma and I don't "only" drive on smooth surfaces. Ditching XREAS was the best thing i could have done. Period. Now for $1300, you have gotten into the aftermarket Coil-over territory where i'm sorry to say, will give you the on-road handling you're looking for plus provide increased height and handle the extra weight/towing you say you do on a regular basis better than XREAS. And they are rebuildable for much less. Were you able to test out other suspension systems prior to removing the 5100's and going back to XREAS?

I can understand you searching for the same ride quality as XREAS since you have gotten used to the ride and how it handles. It just depends on the OP's price range which I'm sorry if this was stated earlier. A quality coilover system (Overland Warehouse, King, Fox, ICON) will not only keep you flat while cornering, it will eliminate nose dives (including if you run additional weight up front) and soak up bumps, potholes, etc whenever you encounter them.

XREAS is downright brutal when you encounter anything that is not smooth. The system is not set up to handle abrupt surface changes if you are traveling anything over 20 mph including potholes. I drove 30-40k on XREAS and 30-40K on my current suspension and i can truly say I have zero regrets on upgrading and I would never go back.

Now we can "web" debate all we want on what's better, XREAS vs XYZ suspension. As stated in my earlier post, ride is subjective and this is my opinion based on my experience.

And yes, I suspect many on here have not driven with the XREAS for any length, as if they had, there is simply no way they wouldn't agree that is gives superior on road experience.

As stated above, 30-40k on XREAS and 30-40k on my suspension. Wholeheartedly believe that XREAS is worse. And i'm only referring to on-road handling.

I have literally driven ton's of SUV/Truck high ride vehicles and I can honestly say that the XREAS system gives the best ride I have ever experienced on a 4x4 SUV. It allows one to drive the vehicle much more aggressively and provides a much better on road experience.

Are you referring to stock suspensions or aftermarket suspensions? If you are referring to aftermarket, they either were low quality setups or we may have different opinions of what provides a better on road experience. I drive more aggressively in my current set up than i ever did with XREAS and I feel more in control.

I would have to slow down if i encountered several potholes/uneven pavement or a speed bump at normal speed. If i didn't i would feel a bone jarring hit or an uncontrolled rough ride. I drive through the mountain passes which include wide sweeping turns and damaged roads due to the ice. Now I can maintain my speed and speed up if need be while keeping in complete control over any road surface.

As stated in both your threads, these are your opinions. This is mine. I originally suggested the Bilstein solution based on others experiences but did caveat it with I have never ridden in a truck with 5100's. Ride quality is very subjective and your first hand experience is helpful for others who are considering this option. However, I just wanted to ensure that when the OP or other members read this thread, that at least in my opinion not all aftermarket suspensions behave in the same manner.

I drove my '03 T4R Sport with XREAS for 113k miles. I just recently ditched the system and installed a set of ICON coilovers.

Needless to say, I'm kicking myself in the rear now for not ditching the XREAS sooner. My highway ride is much improved with a sportier, firmer ride and offroad is simply incredible.

Save up for a nice coilover system and ditch the XREAS, You'll be happy you did even if you only drive highway miles.

I had no idea XREAS had offended so many people in its short lived days.

I am teetering back and forth on what to do. Mine XREAS are intact, and can't say I have anything negative to say about the system unless, it has anything to do with it looking like its sagging in the front, which I dont think is the issue, or is it?

I want so bad to do the lift on my 05 SE- and from what I have read it sounds like doing the lift without the XREAS is a tad easier?

I just want to know that making the change from XREAS to shocks IS worth it and necessary. I want to do it myself and and so indecisive! :redbrick:

Everyone has their personal opinions on what they did, 1)because they have to support and or stand firm to what they have invested in and b) :)
they have to not sound like they regret it,ya feel me?

gman72 is the only one I know of that not only regretted his choice to ditch the XREAS, but he shared that he did and went back, this is respectable. :thumb3:

Haha, i don't think that it's offended anyone. I think that its from a perspective that you don't know what you're missing until you find something better and you realize what you had wasn't as great as you once thought. I don't necessarily hate XREAS, just that I found something that suited me better.

Never heard of sagging issues with XREAS. Full replacement is easier without XREAS but not difficult.

I do have respect for gman72's willingness to provide his experiences with the 5100 (I did say his feedback was helpful but i think it got lost in my feedback). The only points i disagree with him on was the assumption that everyone that replaced XREAS and are happy with their decision drove a certain way or only on specific road conditions and that my opinion was not based on real world experience with XREAS.

Regarding defending my suspension because I invested the money and/or not sounding like i regret it. Honestly, I'm not trying to sway the OP or anybody to a specific brand. I'm not sponsored by the company and I don't benefit from who purchases the products. I try to provide real world experience without any bias and I detail comparisons that I have first hand knowledge with. The great thing is that I don't feel the need to defend my purchases to anybody. My money, my toys. But when people say "my way is the only way to do it right and all other opinions don't matter", I provide my opinion if its adds to the conversation. As for regrets, I have a few but this discussion isn't specific to my brand of suspension.

As stated many times, ride quality is subjective. Since you live in CO, I suggest contacting members in your area with different suspension setups and ask for a ride so "you" can feel what setup works best for you.
