Reset check engine light

So imagine my surprise when I failed CA smog check because of a check engine light reading. It wasn't on at the time of test but somehow managed to be read.
I've read where battery cable disconnect will do it but still may show up on smog test. My question is what will I have to do to clear this? Any ideas?

Well you can either reset a CEL by removing the battery cable for a minute then replacing or using a OBDII device. In either case, the vehicle cannot be directly taken to a safety inspection place because the various circuits are not ready to be tested.

Most ECU circuits take about 50 miles of driving at near highway speeds sustained, hence they may tell you to drive it some more and then come back. Can't get around that. Your FSM will have more specifics on the exact conditions the ECU is looking for before it says a given circuit is "ready", most safety inspection stations require 2 or 3 out of 4 to be 'ready' before they'll proceed.

So you may have no actual CEL code, only that not enough of the circuits are ready (e.g 02 sensor, ect.)
