i was getting about 13 mpg, then i read on this board that it may help if i reset the ECU. i did this by disconnecting the battery for one hour. I was surprised it actually worked, now getting about 18 mpg. don't know what the computer changed, but it worked. thank you forum!

Not to rain on your parade, but if you bring up the mileage display and hold the reset button for about 3 seconds it will reset your mileage display. I know personally if I reset the meter using the button my displayed mileage will start off lower, and then work its way back up again. The only way to truely tell is brim your tank at the gas station reset your tripometer and then do the math at your next fill-up!

Agreed. The LCD display in my 4Runner is 1-2 mpg optimistic.

The vast majority of the on-boards are off.

If you have not been resetting the Avg MPG at each fill-up, the on-baord is averaging since the last reset. SO.... if you were doing a lot of stop and go driving and averaging 12-14 MPG fill-up after fill-up w/o resetting the on-board, you can drive around with an actual of 20-22 MPG for a few fill-ups and the on-board will barely budge much higher than the 12-14. Get in the habit of resetting the on-board at each fill-up AND begin hand-calculating. The later will provide more accuracy.
