Resonator delete or not with muffler swap?

Yes I have searched and read/listened to every exhaust post here and on the interweb - so no flames please. Even with headphones its impossible to make an informed decision. :ranger:

I have the 4.7L and am considering the Magnaflow or a Flowmaster (muffler not cat back) but I don't want the dreaded highway drone on the way to the NC mountains. So I am hesitant to delete the resonator.

That said, I want it to sound like a V8 when I get on it. I know pick your poison right?

I'm tired of the soccer mom sound and need your help please.

I had to remove the resonator when bending the exhaust to behind the rear mud flap. Done to eliminate the risk of steep departure angles catching the exhaust.

Can't say that I notice any difference in sound.

If I could I would make my V8 4Runner silent. When in the forest, all I want to hear is the crunch of the tires. I purchased the V8 version of the 4Runner because it is quieter than the V6.

What muffler are you running? I won't be trying to be stealthy for deer hunting so I'm wanting a muscular sound the 4.7l deserves but not obnoxious in the cab.

My neighbors wont complain about some noise. I put a cat back Borla on my Camaro SS and love it. But I think that's overkill on the 4Runner.

Not really to be honest I just want a slightly deeper exhaust note without being crazy loud or droning at highway speeds.

For the loud I have a Camaro SS with a Borla exhaust. :car:

Awesome thanks! My muffler shop will install for $65. I can drive it for a while and if I want to delete the resonator later that's easy to get done.

I run a flowmaster super 10 which is more aggressive than most want but just make sure to run it as close to the rear axle as you can to eliminate drone. It's honestly not bad at all and I haven't heard any complaints from my passengers. I also deleted my resonator and dumped it right after the axle down.

Update on results

UPDATE:

I installed a Magnaflow 12256 but did not have the resonator removed. On start up it has a little more growl but not loud at all. It does sound more aggressive on acceleration but moderate. Almost no drone at speed. I can hear it but not obnoxious or annoying.

It sounds like a V8 now but not loud. I will give it a few months and see if I want to remove the resonator later.
