Restored title, 1999 sr5 5-speed: suggestions whether I should I buy this

Hey guys. We already own a 1999 sr5 4wd auto , but my fiancee's civic is dying. I'm thinking about letting her drive our 99 sr5 auto and getting this 5-speed for myself.

1999 Toyota 4runner 4x4

It's listed now for $10k and the dealer said it's a restored title (was stolen) and they replaced the tires and some dents in the back. I wonder if this is why the trailer hitch is missing.

$10k seems too high for a restored title, however, the condition, low miles and the 5-speed attract me. From other pictures it seems it may even have an e-locker. I'm going to test drive it tomorrow before work. This is in Scottsdale, AZ.

What do you guys think?? Stay away or go for this?? I couldn't find any concrete information about value depreciation for salvage-restored titles. What kind of a ballpark figure would you recommend for dealer negotiation? Any tips/suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Look. Salvage titles are a crap shoot and they destroy resale value.

He bought it, at auction, for 3-4k and is marking it way, way, way up.


I bet you could walk out with it for 4k or under.

I just called the AZ DMV and my insurance agent (I'm new to AZ) and they both said that a "Restored" title doesn't really affect the resale value. From what both the DMV and my agent said, looks like here in AZ, restored titles mainly originate from 2 events: hail damage and theft. True salvage titles do influence the resale value a lot, but this car is not a salvage. I'm not concerned too much about the resale anyways, as I would plan on keeping it for the long haul.

its still to high, its a low grade sr5, it doesnt even have the factory fog lights, or tow hitch, nor does it appear to have a sun roof. and the timing belt hasnt been done either

FYI: 2 weeks ago I bought a 97 SR5 with 130k in PERFECT condition (needs new rear coils) for $3800. That was here in Phoenix off of craigslist with a clean title. There are much better offers out there. If you ever decide to sell it just be prepared for a headache. As stated above, a salvage title destroys resale value. And that resale value is a very serious thing to think about with 4runners due to them holding their value so well.

Similar in most states. A car is given a salvage title when repair is beyond worth of vehicle.

A restored title simply means it passed the Arizona safety inspection.

Not sure what you are referring to with a true salvage title. If you vehicle has a restored title, that means it was totaled out and was given a salvaged title. Someone bought it, fixed it enough to pass Arizona's inspection and was given a restored title.


As for the price. 10k is outrageous and the dealer knows it. For every vehicle they sell to someone savvy to walk away with only 100 bucks in profit, you have someone scared of negotiating that will pay that 10k.


Listen to everyone on here. You have someone saying they bought it, private party, for 3800. Figure that a dealer bought it at auction for cheaper than that, because they did.

If you did actually want it, I honestly think 4,000 to 4,500 is a decent bid. If you really want it, maybe 5 to 6k. I don't think it is worth that much.. but to each their own.

I bought a 99 Tacoma trd in good condition, with 0 accident history, for 5500 3 years ago.

10k, what a laugh. They are hoping to get a sucker scared at negotiating..

Tell the DMV or your agent to buy it then, they're both giving you bad info if they think a restored (aka Reconstructed) title doesn't hurt resale. As others said, stay away.

LOL this isn't even a real legal term. It is a salvaged title and the vehicle is worth 0 - 50% of normal value.

The seller is so full of it. Even if it was only stolen and not damaged/destroyed by the previous owner, the bad title means you shouldn't pay more than 75% of KBB value.

For $10,000 it better have 50k miles or less on it. But with a salvaged title you can't even trust the odometer because it is SALVAGED :flamethrwoer2:

I wouldn't go anywhere near $10k for that with a branded title no matter what the story. Bottom line is that if you ever decide to sell it yourself, you're not going to get close to that.

Due to the overwhelming response, I may not even test drive it then. 5 speeds are hard to find, frustrating.

I wouldn't even consider it. Lots of things seem fishy about it. Way overpriced and not to mention I would never ever consider a vehicle from a place that would put the words "sharp" on the windshield. 5 spds are fun but not worth getting screwed.
