resurface tundra rotors at the stealer

I just got back from the stealer and they charged me $187 to resurface the front rotors! I can get new toyota ones for that price! Who here wants to bet that it didn't fix the problem as I think it's a rear brake issue and they didn't even look at those! If I have to go back, I'm asking for my $$$ back!

Now I know why I work on cars myself...

That is ROBBERY plain and simple. I work at a Ford dealer body shop, and our Quicklane charges 189 to REPLACE the pads, and machine the rotors. Oreilly's will machine rotors for 12-15 bucks each depending on the are you are in.

I called around when I still had the regular 4runner rotors on to see if I could get them resurfaced, but couldn't find anyplace that still does it. Everyone said it's cheaper to get new ones so that's what they do. I wish we had an Oreillys around here but we don't. I just checked and there isn't one within 100 miles.

I just had them do it without asking the price. That's the last time I will do that!

if you take them in, it shouldnt be more than $15-20 each. how much are new rotors?

Here in Arkansas Oreillys only charges $12 per rotor.

Cheaper than $187. Last dealer I went to charged 2.0 hours of labor to replace the pads and machine the rotors, labor rate was $110/hour. That's $220 plus $80 for pads. $300. I put new pads on for $45 and called it good and never had a problem.

$187 isnt cheaper than you can have them resurfaced for, if you take them in.

and if you're doing the work yourself, you'll be taking them off anyway, why not have them turned if theyre still thick enough?

$112 is cheaper than $187, at least in Virginia. Depending on how glazed or warped the rotors are or if they've been turned once already, there may not be enough material left to leave them above the minimum spec. Instead of taking them off, getting someone to give me a ride, waiting for a shop (if there even is one near me - I have no idea) to put them on a lathe, getting a ride back etc. Then getting a vibration thru the steering wheel while on the brakes because they weren't done right or whatever the case may be. Then having to take them off and bring them back again. F all that. I can order a new set and put them on for an extra 5 minutes of time in my driveway and have no down time. I chose that route. Also, I know I have a nice new set of rotors and peace of mind.

and, there is no shop in this country that is going to charge you $187 to resurface those rotors, IF YOU TAKE THEM IN.

Most stelalerships labor rates are around $100/hr. now (around here anyway).

They probably charged you just over an hour labor (1.3 or 1.4) few bucks to resurface, and the obligatory shop supply fee.

Pretty easy to see where it can be close to $200 to resurface $56 rotors.

A few months after I bought my 06 tacoma the brakes started to vibrate a tiny bit. Took it to the stealership under warranty. They said they put new pads in and resurfaced the rotors. Apparently they didn't test-drive it because it was 10 times worse than when I dropped it off. Took it back the next day and they put all new hardware up front. All new brakes at 15K miles.
